Help to ID unusual block serial #
A buddy of mine just bought this Roadster - Texas title says it's a '29. We are wondering if it's a '28 based on the brake handle located forward of the shifter and the very unusual block serial number. I personally have not seen a block stamped like this one. Of course, we know that the engine could have been swapped out at some point and/or the block could have been re-stamped, but we would like to know if someone could de-cypher the block serial number for us and give us some other clues to look for to confirm the production year.
Appreciate any helpful comments. |

Re: Help to ID unusual block serial #
Not an expert, so take this with a grain of salt.
I'm thinking the the engine is a replacement, with the original engine being Canadian, when they re-stamped they abbreviated the full engine number. (leaving out a letter or two) The "C" indicates Canadian made motor, the "1260" indicates the engine made prior to April of 1928. I'm properly wrong on this, but now that someone has attempted an answer others will chime in to correct me...and Wa-la...you'll have your answer.

Re: Help to ID unusual block serial #
If that is a G it is probably from a Gleaner Combine.

By jove, I think you are definitely on to something! I'll take a closer look at the engine but now that you mention it, it sure looks like a "G" to me. I'll bet that's what he has. Any idea what year it might have been from? Thanks for your observations. |

Re: Help to ID unusual block serial #
Years ago I was working on a pipeline with my dad in Meade Kansas. We went through a farmers field where there was an old Gleaner combine. I had heard that some of the Gleaners came with overhead valve model a engines and sure enough this one had a Riley overhead valve engine in it. The speed of the pipeline welders (about 6 miles a day) prevented me from asking about a purchase. Sure wish I had.

It looks like a Gleaner number. The Canadian numbers always had an A after the C. Hear is a link.
