Default Mitchell overdrive.

Got my Mitchell overdrive installed in my 31 Tudor. It drove better than it ever has for me. Drove it 60 miles and it drove better than my 2021 pickup. I will be driving my Tudor a lot more. Best investment I have ever made.

I have posted before that I have 4 Model As and all of them have a Mitchell unit in them. I agree, they transform the car. My most used one also has one of their synchronised gearboxes. It is the car I use when towing the camper. High second is a very handy gear when doing that, especially since I learned how to move from high second to standard third gear in the one action (pull both levers back together).
Money well spent.

I have the Mitchell overdrive too and love it. My rear end is the standard 3.78 but in overdrive it is very close to 3.00 to 1. I too will use second over then third standard and the reverse when down shifting for grades or lower speeds.

Lawrie, 3.78. I find it works well with the extra drag of the camper at 50 mph. We often talk of us travelling together half way around the country in 2014

L, Wow, Knowing how well that engine goes, you'd better be careful - there are speed limits.
That said, I had my Burtz over 107 a couple of days ago. Just as well the cops weren't around!

5 to 55 mph in one synchronized shift.. makes a modified engine fun… it’s a great anti theft device too.. two sticks and a clutch? forget it

We putt putted en masse to breakfast the other day. Wife had things to do when we got home so it was 70mph on the freeway home. Sounds like I need a Burtz too......

Had some aluminum round stock , 1”, extended the Mitchell stick.

I can stay in high range all the time for best acceleration..usual driving just split second..split third on grades..I’m running about double stock engine power..

I have had mine for about 2 years and love it. My Phaeton can do 55 all day long and faster if needed. I have found 2nd high to be great and I do think this is the number one modification you can do with an A........You will grow to love it more with time....Congrats

I enjoy my overdrive. It just makes the car more practical. I will say that I also enjoy my cast iron brake drums.

Some minor modifications to the A just make it so that a person wants to drive it a lot more. Erands, joyrides, church, local chapter meetings, whatever.

Going to install a “‘39” transmission in the future, got a bunch of swan neck shifters in the deal, going to adapt one to the Mitchell bell crank.

Thats if it doesn’t lengthen the throw too much

Could you give us the current price for a Mitchel Overdrive? I have a feeling they are around 4k by now with all the inflation.

They cost about $3,500 including tax and shipping delivered here in California. If delivered out of state the shipping may be higher, but you may avoid state tax. They ship from Colusa, California. They are the same price if ordered direct from Mitchell or through any one of the suppliers.
There is about a six-month lead time.

Contact Mitchell at: 530-458-4500

I don't know about the O/D but Steve told me a couple of weeks ago that they are not taking orders at this time on the synchro trans and the waiting list is 8 months.

Thanks Tom
I got mine a few years back for a bit less but with all the inflation $3500 is a very fair price. For anyone on the fence this is a large investment but it changes the car so much you will find yourself driving more and also going on longer drives. Basically the Mitchel will let you take your car cross country on any 2 lane blacktop and maintain 55 if needed as long as your car is in top shape to start with.....wonderful product.

And don't worry about ever being able to wear it out. They are the same unit a Canadian friend used in his 1956 Victoria and it is still going many years later.

I just spoke with Steve - same thing with the overdrive. He told me 6-9 months. He'll take your name for a waiting list and when he gets two weeks out and your name comes up he'll contact you for a deposit and specs for exactly what you want. Seems like a reasonable approach.

I ordered my overdrive end of June 2022. I received it mid April 2023.

I had forgot all about it, and then a surprise phone call from Steve and he says your name is at the top of the list. Time to get off the pot. He then takes down the particulars and you send the money. About two weeks from the time of phone call it showed up.

My car already has the Mitchell transmission. So, this is going to be good.

I’ve had mine in my Town Sedan about 16-17 years now, and would not own a Model A without one. Besides being able to comfortably cruise on the hiways, I even joy shifting into OD on our surface streets, when I get up to 40-45 mph. It is amazing how quiet the car is. In many ways it is so easy to use it’s like having a 4th gear, but so much more verstile. And 2nd hi in the mountains is perfect.

Model A Ron - I just got mine last month and it cost a little over $3000. I did get the overdrive dip stick kit also. A Model A member who knows all the ins and outs put mine in and I am very satisfied on how it shifts and car runs.

Hey Y-Blockhead, I love the 4 inch extension you added to the Mitchell Overdrive.
Is that something you fabricated or does Mitchell offer it?

If you fabricated it can you specifify the materials used and fabrication done?

Thanks,
Ron

Ron, I used a piece of ⅜" schedule 80 S/S tubing and tapped both ends to match the Mitchell shifter thread and inserted a short piece of all thread in one end to screw the knob onto. The knob is for a Ruckstell shifter, just to mess with people... https://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/p...0805&cat=41824

I used a drop of green LocTite to keep the extension tight.

I'm not sure where you can find ⅜" schedule 80 S/S tubing tho. I got it with some other scap metal.

The floor mats and carpet are Lebaron-Bonney, but as you know they are no longer.

Mine has a 39 Trans and Mitchell OD. The trans shifter rubs in the OD knob. I need to use a smaller knob or bend er reshape the OD shifter. I wonder if the 39 Shift tower is wider than the A which would move the OD shifter closer to the centerline of the shifter.

The V8 shift lever wears at the ball on the end of the stick, that makes the shifter sloppy. I put a piece of aluminum round stock on the Mitchell shift lever instead of a shift knob, mainly cause I didn’t like bending over to shift it..I’m going to try and adapt a swan neck shift lever to the Mitchell linkage.. two swan necks side by side would be neat.. but it probably won’t work..

They are a little over $3000 but may go up a couple of hundred more as Steve Mitchell has a long waiting list and not enough workers. I got my name on the waiting list for my 28 roadster but they could not tell me how long of a wait it will be. I do know that the wait is worth it in the long run.
