device to jump start my model A

Is there any kind of device that I can carry in my model A to jump start if the battery does not have enough power? In other words, if I go out for a drive, park the car, turn off the engine and then have a problem restarting the car.

Make sure there are two of you. One to drive and one to push.

It’s really easy to push start the Old Ford. Just needs a couple of feet of movement. Or a slight decline.

I would be very careful trying to jump start a Model A. It is possible to shear a rear axle key which in turn damages the axle key slot in the axle shaft. This is a very nasty and expensive repair.

I recently could not start my Victoria and wanted to move the car from the street to the garage. I did not have a spare coil which turned out to be the problem. If you remove the spark plugs, you can very easily use the starter to drive the car a short distance.

My engine has only about 2500 miles on it and has excellent compression. I know I have weak arms and I could not move the engine with the crank. Ed

Jump starting would have nothing to do with damaging an axle key. Push starting might.

Try on-line for a "jump box. If you only find one for 12V it will work if no lights on. I've jumped my old A with 12V, no problem.

Most of the reliable units are both chargers and jump start set ups and they are really too big to haul around. They would likely have to be plugged in to a power outlet to function. It would be easier to carry a battery like the sealed valve regulated Optima types.

There are a lot of small six volt sealed batteries that are used for alarms and back up batteries that might be made to function if connected in parallel to increase the amperage output. It may cost as much as an optima to do all that and get the same amp hour capability. For a short run, a car could be started with a 12-volt battery but using a smaller 6-volt battery to run the coil in order to get to a place to purchase a new battery.

I wouldn't go on a long tour with a 6-volt car unless I knew the battery was up to the task.

Check out Megawise jump start. They are 12V but as noted they will work.

You can connect jumper cables at the starter switch and any convenient ground.

Do a search for topdon jump starters, they make many differnt
priced models and are light weight and small. They work very good.

52 years ago I parked my A in the driveway on a hill facing uphill, tried to start it in reverse but failed. Putting my back against the spare pushed it up and out of the driveway let it roll down the street and popped started it. That kid really wanted to drive his A, must have been to see a girl !

A model A starts easy with a hand crank. it would be very worth your time to learn how. Why own a vintage car and not know how to use it?

Any chance your existing battery is too small or too old? I never had any problems with my '31 RDPU. Find your real problem.

While Parking my roadster in front of a yard sale I heard a man from the porch say he used to crank those in his younger days. I reached under the seat and offered him my crank. His grand children (the house owners), his children and visitors at the sale were totally augh struck as he grabbed the crank and started my car. Imagine pushing ninety, that must have made his day!

My .02¢

#1 - hand cranking a cold engine, ... not as easy as you would think.
#2 - for those using a 12v battery to jump a 6v car, people have a tendancy to put their foot on the brake, ... bye-bye tail light bulbs.

I have found a maintained battery, a good ground, a properly adjusted belt and keeping an eye on your ammeter is all that needed to keep the gremlins away.
