Enclosed Transportation inquiry

May need to move a car from Bridgeport CT to Detroit MI. Would anyone have a recommendation for an insured carrier they have used and pleased with. Any guess as to what cost could be? .

I would guess around 2000.

be sure to carry your own insurance and not rely on the carrier.
I used a carrier that promised 300k of insurance. they totalled my car and refused to pay.
lesson learned.

I used InterCity about 8 years ago. I believe they charged me about $1,500 for a trip from Greenbay, WI to Fishkill, NY. Good company - no complaints from me. They will provide an estimate online if I remember correctly.

This past fall I contracted Passport Transport because I had good service before. They said one to two weeks from near Philadelphia to south of Detroit which should be a fairly common run. Week after week nothing but excuses so after a month I canceled. I was reluctant but contracted Montway. Reluctant because they don't have trucks but broker truckers. In less than 24 hrs. they had a trucking company and in less than four days I had my car in my driveway. Kept in contact for the trip and did what they said they would do. On top of that they were under $1000 enclosed whereas Passport was $1100, Reliable wanted $1200 and Intercity wanted $1500.

Almost all transport companies are brokers who use independent haulers. Don't let that scare you, as many of the drivers are retired folks who know how to take care of their cargo. Prices are sky high since Covid and rising gas prices. Just gulp and go for it. You can get a hundred quotes on line as I am sure you are aware.

Go spend some time at truckstops
across the lower 48 states.

The majority of brokered transport tractor trucks
are driven by Russian - Ukrainian - Immigrant
folks because the pay is less than minimum wage
in most states & the weather needed to be
driven in is often hazardous.

These folks have little experience and
often damage vehicles driving them
on and off trailers during the haul
and at the outdoor storage yards.

Truck driving for auto transport carriers
is among the lowest paid job there is.

The majority of “ Independents “ get their
loads thru auto transport brokers who lie
about timeframe - cost - method of transport.

If you want your vehicle to arrive
in the condition you bought it …

Your best bet is to drive it home
yourself or trailer it yourself.

If that is not possible - hire the
person directly that drives the truck
pulling the trailer - pay no deposit
unless they have to drive empty a
distance to pick up your vehicle.

I've used Montway I think twice now. No complaints. Like others have said, they are simply the "dealer", kind of like on eBay. You buy from an individual, not eBay, it's just the service/broker.

Having just had a car shipped from SC to AK, I can attest to the timeframe and cost Jim mentioned. Even though I received a written quote prior to contracting for the shipment, neither one was what turned out to be actuals. On the plus side, the car was delivered in exactly the same shape (plus a little extra dirt) as it was when it left SC.

cost is obviously a factor. not everyone can afford to pay 2.00 a loaded mile for aninop.
all depends on the type of vehicle you are having hauled. If its a totally restored car, you'ld be nutz to use an open trailer. On the other hand, the cars I buy are always fixer uppers.......

There is a cost to providing quality
auto transport service.

Some folks rationalize not paying the
cost to have quality auto transport service
done for a variety of reasons:

Their value of a vehicle shipped is one of them.

You are paying for space on a trailer.
The cost to transport what you fill
that space with is your choice.

It doesn’t matter if you paid $500 or $5000
for a vehicle - that is your choice - if you decide
to buy a $500 vehicle 2000 miles away from
where you want it hauled to - some folks might
question your thinking.

A $500 parts car that has $2000 in value
arriving with $2000 in damage
is a boat anchor.

Eventually - you get what you pay for.

I am not singling out Montway.
Their name came up on this thread
so I use their customer feedback as
an example to illustrate a point about
the reality of auto transport.

The reality is - 90% of auto transport is brokered.

Montways BBB complaint record is fairly
standard in the auto transport industry.

If you read the fine print in a standard auto transport
broker agreement (which most folks do not)
it states you agree to “ customary & acceptable damage “
which is not limited to - but includes:

Mechanical damage
Glass damage
Body damage
Paint damage

Here is one paragraph from Montways website:

do not pay the cost of what quality service actually is.

If I only went by your method, I would be incredibly upside down in this hobby. As such, Ive done fairly well swapping up because of understanding value in various situations.
Just one aspect of this hobby.

Folks who are cheap rarely will admit it.

They will quote witty phrases to rationalize
their expectation that services and parts
should be priced below cost so they can
operate their business.

Those folks are not good business operators.

They operate at a loss or an unfair profit margin.

Their expectation that others subsidize their
business by providing them goods & services
below cost is an insult and should not be tolerated.

the average retail price of #2 diesel stayed pretty
consistent - that changed in the middle of 2021.



January 2021 - $2.68 a gallon
January 2023 - $4.57 a gallon

An increase of over 50%.

OTR Drivers used to be respected & paid well.
Now the hourly wage is less than the minimum
wage in most states when all hours are accounted
for in an average day.

Just about everyone I knew when I started
back in 2006 is no longer transporting.

I don’t get up every day to transport for
the cost of fuel - or to subsidize someone’s
decision to purchase a vehicle at a distance
from where they live & won’t go get themselves.

I am not the only choice for folks to make.
Every day I communicate with folks by
text - DNM - phone - and even still email.

I tell everyone what I would do if I were
in their position - my manner is direct.

90% of the time my advice does not involve
my services - I see myself as giving advice
from the drivers seat - in hopes of educating
folks so they can make an informed decision.

This Winter has been the worst since I
have been hauling for most parts of the
country - the first quarter of 2023 has
been the slowest for my business
since 2006 when I started.

They have to carry insurance legally. But it only covers damage if they're at fault so you shouldn't rely on that for help if something else happens. Check your existing plan to see if they offer any supplemental insurance that would cover you. Someone else ballparked the cost around $2000 and that sounds about right to me, but it will depend on a lot things (for ex. gas prices) so you're better off calling up a couple options and getting an estimate to more firm idea of the cost. Personally, I've used these guys https://www.a1autotransport.com/ a couple times and been happy with them but always good to shop around to get a better price.
