Default Rear transmission hook?

There is a mysterious hook looking thing on the back of the u-joint bell on my 29. It doesn't support and weight, so what does it do?

It stops the engine/gearbox assembly bouncing up and down as you let out the clutch - most likely in reverse.

If I recall correctly, and I may be way off here, but it was used during assembly on early cars. As production changed, it was removed on later years as it became redundant.

This was used through March of '29. It allows for you to pull the engine and hang the torque tube off the center cross member. Page 4-15 of the Restoration Guidelines breaks down all the differences throughout production.

Don't have the guidelines? You can buy them here.

I think old Henry did for one reason only, to confuse and confound the next 100 years of Model A enthusiasts.

The early U-joint housings with the hook have an off-set bolt pattern so they can only be bolted up with the hook up. When he discontinued the hook, he made the bolt pattern symmetrical.

All early and late transmission rear bearing retainers will bolt up to all early and late transmission housings, but you have to know which U-joint housing you are bolting up or all the holes won't line up. This is why when you buy a set of U-joint housing gaskets two of the holes are elongated.

I have pulled countless rear ends out of Model A's and found only four of the six bolts there because the rear bearing retainer on the transmission did not match the U-joint housing.

Since my car is 1929, could I assume it was built before March. It is a Canadian build.
