Default Smell of original tire air?

OK, we've all heard jokes about 'original air' in tires.
I thought I knew it all 'till I went garage sale-ing today with the wife. I saw an old wood wheel with a tire on it in one of the garages. I was staring at it trying to figure out what it fit when the guy said to me "20's Franklin, still holds air, wanna smell it?" At that point I figured he was going to follow with the 'original air' thing, but he didn't. He pushed down the valve and said "Take a whiff." Being the cynic that I am, I figured why not- I'll bite and see what the joke is. We all know what a tire store smells like (Heaven to me!) and that is pretty much what air smells like when you let it out of a tire. But not this time. I must have had a puzzled look, and right away he said "Smells like a handful of new rubberbands, not like a tire? -There's an original red rubber inner tube in it, not one of those new black butyl things." DAMN. I learned two things today: 1) 'Original air' must not have smelled like today's tire air. 2) If you go garage sale-ing with the wife, you won't be bringing home an old useless wheel that fits nothing for "only $25". Maybe it will be there tomorrow?

Put some of today's air in there, and it'll rot in a week.

I owned a beautiful low mileage '28 Indian Scout that still had the original tires on it. The guy that found it said the rear tire was flat but the front was still holding "Indian Factory air."
