Cut out on '39 generators?
Hello.
I am wondering if a '39 generator would have a cut-out on it? How many different types of generators were issued in '39 for passenger cars? When was the last year for cut-outs on generators? Thank you for your time and replies, Ford Barn. -CGW |

Re: Cut out on '39 generators?
On the wiring diagrams the 39 std shows a cut-out and a 39 dlx shows a voltage regulator, but I have no idea on the production dates. Kube would be a good source for that information.

Thank you JSeery.
From your reply I can assume there were different generator set-ups for standard and deluxe. This is helpful. I hope to hear from Kube on this matter too. -CGW |

Re: Cut out on '39 generators?
Here are the diagrams if that is of interest to you. Different generators, 2 brush vs 3 brush.

Re: Cut out on '39 generators?
The generators are totally different for a deluxe and standard. Two brushes versus three. Voltage regulator versus cutout. You may want to find someone with a copy of the '38-'39 Book which was done by Gary Mallast for the V8 Club of America or go on the EFV8 Club website and purchase one. Anything you need to know is in this book.

Note that the generator was specific to a regulator OR a cutout. the two could not be interchanged. There is speculation that throughout the entire production ruin, the Standard, when ordered with a radio, got the voltage regulator. I can't say how true that is.

Mike, "Starting February 1938 two-brush generators with voltage regulators were specified for all radio equipped cars."
This quote from the '38-'39 Ford Book, page 7-25, which is also referenced in chapter IV, and in Running Changes in chapter VIII.

Re: Cut out on '39 generators?
Didn't the 39 have both an "ammeter" and a "battery" gauge available? Were those for the different generator setups?

Re: Cut out on '39 generators?
39 standard used a 3 brush gen with a cut out , fan mounted on gen, 39 deluxe used a 2 brush gen with a voltage regulator, fan mounted on front of crankshaft

Re: Cut out on '39 generators?
I have a 39 Standard that originally came with a 3 brush generator and cutout. The output of this generator is only rated at 15 amps at 6 volts. When driving at night with headlights and a heater when the generator is adjusted for maximum output it would "sling solder" out of the commutator and still not keep up with demand. I ended up installing a 2 brush with regulator for normal use. I believe the 2 brush generator is rated for 30 amps.

Re: Cut out on '39 generators?
You question "recent"? Hell, an explanation of "trend" would be more fun!

We all seem to be very proud of being old-timers, but I'd give anything to be a know-nothing punk ass kid again!

Re: Cut out on '39 generators?
Being in my 50s, I'm a little of both. One foot in, and one foot out. Hopefully.
