Default My new roadster

On a whim I went to look at a 28 roadster that was for sale nearby. The price seemed very good and it was a 28, which intrigued me. It was not an early car, as it had the emergency brake in the center. It ran great and driving it was a real hoot, other than the fact that the brakes were so out of adjustment it barely stopped. I thought about it overnight and called the owner the next morning and made an offer which he accepted.

The engine number on the title indicates that it was a November 28 engine. I have not been able to confirm that the number on the engine is the same as the number on the title. I bring it home on Friday.

I have wanted a second car and almost bought a 50 Ford and a 39 Ford because I wanted a flathead V8. Well, I learned that buying a car is a matter of the right car at the right price in the right location at the right time. I am tickled because I never thought I could afford to own a roadster!

Looks nice Love the color! Hood louvers appear to be early '28...check and see if it has any carry over parts or features, could be an early bird!

Just love those '28 Roadsters, no outside door handles to get in your way!
Really enjoy your new A.

Looks very nice and that's also my favorite time period.
I like the drum taillight, fluted headlamps, and powerhouse generators.

It's nice to be able to buy them already done also, and if the brakes just need to be correctly adjusted, that's not too bad a job.

How can you identify the louvers as "early '28" louvers?
I'm still learning things about Model A's.

The early 28 louvers are each the same length, while the later ones grow in length as you go front to rear. This way the tops of the louvers remain parallel to the hood hinge.

On this car it's a little hard to tell from the picture, but I thought the top of the louvers appears parallel to the hinge.

BTW, I see 3 pictures and 4 red X's. Does anyone else see the same thing?

Thanks for clearing that up. AND I see 3 pictures with NO red X's.

Great looking car. I have an early '29 (Jan.) with many of the same features. Your color
combination is one of my favorites. Good job...enjoy.

I know little about the 28s, but I would not think a post Nov. 28 build date is early. It has a red wheel, but the red is coming off and I would think the red was more than just a coating on the wheel

It looks like a very nice example, in the hands of the last owner for 17 years. I don't see any red x's, but this was my first load from Photobucket and it took a couple of tries to get it right.

I appreciate all the comments. I am thrilled to have it. I'd rather be lucky than good.

The red comes off on my hands and clothing if the weather is humid and the car sets outside overnight, but that wouldn't be more than a couple times a year. I wipe it down with a cloth and then it's OK. The other day when I got in the car for the first time in 6 months I expected the red to rub off, but the unheated garage kept it dry enough to stay good. The red is more than a coating. It's the color of the material in the steering wheel, but will keep rubbing off.

BTW, the Ford blueprints refer to it as a brown wheel, which it is more brown than red.

I think mine has been painted or something as it seems to be flaking off. When did they change the wheel color to black? I did not see that in the judging stds, but I did not look very closely.

I'm not sure of an exact date for the change, but it would have been very late 1928 or early 1929. The repro red wheels I've seen (and I have one as a spare) look very nice.

Beautiful, I'm very fond of the early cars. My phaeton is painted the same as your roadster. This picture was taken several years ago on the last tour I took it on. It has been stored while I worked on other projects but is coming out of storage for a complete, back to original, restoration as soon as I'm back from the Summer Tour.

Good luck. Looks to be solid and straight . Runs great and a little brake work sounds like you did well.
