Yes....I saw those two holes in firewall and wondered if a cover went on there ...I was looking at eBay and saw a "Cover for a 1940" and got me thinking maybe my car should have one....I know it wouldn't be the same since the one for sale was half/egg shaped...I've only had this car for three months....Older restored 1948 Ford Station Wagon....I've put new water pumps on it ,and want to put a stock fuel pump back on....The electric one on there now is louder then the engine I swear....Carl

Look at that, will you? Old "Electrician Tape" Henry is way over an hour late in answering, and he gets a thank you for a quick response!

Actually, we all thank Mtn Wudy for his reply to Henry. Some questioners never acknowledge a whole crew of responders with gobs of useful information.

Mtn Wudy, althought a 40 does have the metal cover, the 46-48 as for my knowledge does not and didn't use a metal cover, only the rubber grommet that Old Henry shows in the photo above. I have a 47 and thought the metal style cover on the early 40's style would look nice and clean, and so I purchased an old one that had been bead blasted etc., and then tried to apply it to the fire wall and because the wires distribute somewhat different from the earlier Fords, couldn't seem to get that to happen, probably why you don't see those years with the metal cover. The two holes are there because the same body is used, but those two holes utilized on these years. What I did do because my wiring was all replaced but when they replaced the wire the cut the inside firewall pad which helps in holding the rubber grommet tight against the firewall all together. I saw that the later years 50's used a metal ring and those two screw holes to hold there wire loom in place and they are a split unit which allowed me to secure that and clean up the look that I wanted. Below is a photo.

macsautoparts.com has them $9.95, Ford 49-59 item# 8A-14608 called Main wiring loom grommet retainer, under the electrical and wiring section, then wiring page 4.

I meant to write that the two holes you see on the firewall on each side of the rubber grommet are not used on those years...

i think covers were used up untill ww2, but not after. the '41-'42 covers are a bit different than the '39-'40.

I think that you'll find that the covers were used on '41, '42 and up to early '47 I believe.
