1932 Bumper Bolts?

Hi All,

I have a pair of original bumpers that need bumper bolts.

Does anyone make a repo bolt that will fit original bumpers?
I was told some currently made don't fit right?

Or if anyone has a source for orig bolts I'd be very interested in that.

I believe the Bob Drake ones will fit original bumpers. Please check first with someone who has them. All the other repro bolts are way,way off to the point of being ridiculous . I guess they are made for the repro bumpers. (which are way off from real ones) Real bolts are around, check with Fordbarn guys or ebay. People usually don't advertise them, so you need to ask. Also they usually had a hard life, with scratches and scraps that need to be polished out. Real bolts are easy to spot as the end end of the bolt portion has either a "pinch" shape or a small dimple . Repro ones look like the end of any regular bolt.

Floyd nailed it, including the characteristics of the ends of the two types of original bolts. I also agree that the Drake bolts (at least those of a few years back) do fit.

Also, beware that some original bolts have been bent (the threaded shank relative to V-shaped head) as a result of run ins with trees, fire hydrants, other cars, etc. They are very difficult to straighten. If you buy some from photos, insist on a side view and another side view front to back.

I have a new set of 1932 stainless steel bumper bolts which I have had for a very long time I have placed them on an auction site here in N.Z. for sale but nobody is interested.

Ian, yours have the National Fine thread that original bolts have but Ford bolts are forgings with a stainless cladding over them. While I'm not familiar with the Drake bolts referenced above the other repro bolts I have seen are one piece as yours are.

The Drake bolts are (were at one time at least) stainless clad like the originals.

The only advantage with them being solid stainless steel is they could be reshaped by grinding on the inside and then polished to fit the bumpers. I do not know who I bought them from about 30 years ago.

I need a set of original bumper bolts also. Most repo bumper bolts I have seen have corse threads. I have repo bolts bur will change them when I find them maybe at Hershey? Hope I live longer enough to get this junker correct as it should be.

Bumper bolts are kinda like hood latches for 32. Because so many people are OK with buying the easy to obtain repro parts (always made wrong),but available everywhere, there is not much talk about real ones. However they are out there, you just need to ask all your ole time V8 friends about them. They are in a coffee can somewhere in their shop. They usually don't take them to swap meets as "new" ones don't need polishing( or plating as is the case of hood latches).
Real bumper bolts sell for about the same price as good repros, i.e. $25 each.

I share Floyd's opinion; they are out there. A greater challenge is the original stainless end cap plugs. The reproductions don't fit either original or reproduction bumpers very well.

be careful with those repro solid stainless bolts. i had a set about 20 years ago & found they break easily!

I have a pair of original bumpers. based on how rusty they are. And history. Whatever.

And at least one original bolt. I think.
