Default 33 frame rail serial number

Hi all,

Last night I scraped the left side frame rail from radiator to firewall looking for the serial number but did not find anything stamped on there. I looked on the left frame rail because the diagrams found on the web show the 3 positions on the left rail and talk about it being the "drivers" side frame rail and I thought because it is an American car and they are inherently left and drive, they meant Left side when they say drivers side.

This morning I thought, ok lets look at the DRIVERS side .... which on this car would be the RIGHT side since it is a RHD car.

So just as the write ups say, I scraped the old paint away just near the steering box on the right side frame rail and the picture shows what I found. I did scrape that rail a little more towards the front but not all the way.

I'm a bit perplexed as to what the "371" is because the registration documents of the car say the engine number is B5251035

These numbers do not appear to be part of the vehicle "serial number" note the style of the number 1 is not correct for an US built car "serial number". It should appear as I. There should be a five pointed star before and after the complete series of numbers and letters. Many times the number is very lightly stamped and hard to see.

It's hard for me to tell by the pic, are you calling the left and right side of the car from the driver seat of standing in front of the car? It should be from the drivers seat. Walt

Yup my reference to to Left and Right is the conventional method which is when sitting in the drivers seat or any seat in the car

Of the twenty or so RHD '32-'37s I've owned, all have had their engine numbers stamped on the left side. All of those cars were manufactured in the U.S. I did see a South African (Canadian manufactured) '34 roadster with it stamped on the right side and not on the left side, however.

As mentioned previously, the engine number of your phaeton does not necessarily mean that it was manufactured in the U.S. Only Canadian-made fours had unique prefixes and series of numbers. The '33 fours produced in England used engine numbers assigned to them in blocks from Dearborn and were the familiar 'B' prefix followed by a seven digit number beginning with 5. Back at the ranch, I have a copy of the Rouge Plant Engine Log which shows which blocks of numbers were assigned to Dagenham for their use for the engines produced in England. I believe that it will show that your engine was produced in Dagenham and not in Dearborn. This follows the same pattern encountered in Australia where the V-8 engines and most chassis components were imported from Canada, but the four-cylinder engines were imported from England.

The left side of a car, airplane, or what ever is as if you were sitting in the drivers seat.

Mine is a 33 Tudor, RHD, USA made and exported to Uruguay when new. The serial number is on the left side of the rail, it contains a number 1 that is stamped as "I", which was the way it was done then.
