a friend has a 28 tudor with the early multi disc clutch (you can see the different flywheel thru the starter opening). he is having a noise problem when using the starter. with the old style bendix the bolt head is hitting something. he tried one of the new style bendix's and it was really rubbing where the housing gets big. he is getting to be an expert at removing and installing the starter, but is stumped as to the problem. i've got a couple of later cars, but haven't run into anything like this.

As I recall, the early 1928 starter with Abel drive for the multi-disk clutch was shimmed to create clearance between the drive and the ring gear. Does your friend's starter have any shims behind the starter mounting flange? He may have to experiment with different thicknesses of shims to get the correct clearance. These shims used to be available through the vendors, but I don't know if that is the case anymore, since so many parts are now "out of stock" or "discontinued" with most vendors. He may have to make his own shims from brass. Or does he have too many shims already?

Does your friends starter have a 1/2 or 5/8 inch shaft?

the original starter has 1/2" shaft, but i think he tried another starter with the 5/8" shaft. he had the starters out sunday when i was at his house. i never got to see what is going on , but i wonder about the shims. i've heard about them before. why would the modern bendix rub to the point of scratching it up? another thing... looking in the starter openingyou could see little marks on the flywheel as though the gear was litterly walking around it.

I don't think that a later starter will work with his early flywheel. I recommend that he uses his early starter with the 1/2" shaft and fins the BR starter drive as shown in the Service Bulletins. That drive along with an original shim should work out for him.

I didn't hear of anyone making a modern bendix drive for an early starter. Did I miss something??

No one makes the early replacement or the Abel type drive. This is a sore spot when using the early multi disc clutch but it's not the only one. There are several parts that are hard to find.

It takes a lot of parts to convert them but the later parts are still easy to find and repair.
