F1 Fan bearing
While getting things together to put the engine back in my F1, I was showing the fan bearing to a friend of mine. I was telling him how it has to be lubricated and etc, and he volunteered to make me one for ball bearings. He has some large machining equipment. We removed the cone shaped part inside the original pulley set up. Shouldn't be able to tell it from original, all the changes are inside to factory tin parts.

Re: F1 Fan bearing
Some 8BA fans use double row bearings that are about the same as those in a water pump. I have used a universal water pump shaft & double row bearing to repair them before. The old oiler type fan shafts will last a very long time if a person services it by the Ford Chart. There are individual parts available for them as well for folks that need a repair item. Sealed bearings last a long time too.

Re: F1 Fan bearing
I have three of these original bearings and maybe one is usable. The all aluminum (no worries) assembly on the vendors sites is nowhere to be found. This one is built from a couple of bucks of scrap-yard steel. I'm looking forward to giving this one a try.

Re: F1 Fan bearing
I commend you for what you are doing. 20 years ago I replaced that fan hub with one I made out of a 6 inch chunk of 6061 aluminum and 2 super heavy duty sealed ball bearings riding on a new shaft. Saved the sketches for the fan carrier swivel but not the pulley. Still working fine. Drake also sells a new aftermarket unit using better bearings. The entire story plus lots more interesting info. is here:

Re: F1 Fan bearing
I looked at turning one out of 6061 but was shocked at the cost of a chunk of aluminum that big! This part only replaces the bearing, still using the stock pulley so it looks stock from the outside.

Re: F1 Fan bearing
I think a lot of people get too much tension on these belts. They are nice fat belts with lots of belt face on the pulleys. The fan in particular, since that' all that belt is turning, I pull it up with one hand and tighten the bolt with the other. Seems plenty good that way. The Model A uses a wide belt too, too much tension will destroy water pump bushing.

Re: F1 Fan bearing
Art: So true about the very high cost of 6 inch dia. aluminum, even scrap years ago. Luckily I got left over pieces (for free) from a local aircraft company for my students to use in high school metal shop.
Those were the good days and the kids learned a lot. Hope your idea works super duper. Consider making sketches for others to make the same fan hub modification.- Thanks. |

Re: F1 Fan bearing
I should be able to take the CAD drawings (we used a Bridegport CNC Mill to cut the round part) and produce a printout of the file. I think this assembly could've been made from aluminum round stock and 5/16 flat plate as well.

Re: F1 Fan bearing
Great idea!
Can you post more details, like bearing #s and measurements? Thanks, Ralph |

Re: F1 Fan bearing
Still working on a drawing. Brought all the parts back home and assembled every thing, sure looks like it ought to work.

Re: F1 Fan bearing
The stock shaft wasn't quite .750, if you could find a bearing that fit the shaft you wouldn't need to make a new shaft. I suppose depending on wear, they're all a little different.

Re: F1 Fan bearing
Thanks, one question, once you have this all put together, can the bearings be changed? It looks like the rear bearing would be easy, but the front bearing would not.

Re: F1 Fan bearing
Just take it back apart, slide the shaft out, then you could push each bearing back out. Rob had mentioned to me that if you wanted to be able to take the bearings out without damaging them, it would be a good idea to put a relief on either side behind each bearing so you could get a punch on the outer race.

Re: F1 Fan bearing
I have used one of the above to repair a noisy fan assembly on my '51. You need a press and the shaft has to be trimmed, but they're what works.

Re: F1 Fan bearing
You talking about the fan pulley for the later model cars with skinny belts?

Rob sent me a couple "what he would do different" update files.

Re: F1 Fan bearing
I don't think it's on the drawings, but he made a collar with a set screw that goes behind the rear bearing. the original idea was to lock it down with a little clearance for expansion. I think however, I'm going to make a bushing that will press on the inner race with a wave-washer behind it so it can't rattle in there. I hate stuff that rattles... 8^)

Re: F1 Fan bearing
I've got enough projects, so I bought mine from Luke Balogh up in Canada. (Luke's Custom Machine, Vancouver) The shield on the two bearings says 1628RS.

Re: F1 Fan bearing
Looks spendy...
Interesting that the ID of those bearings are 5/8".

1948F-1:
That's a nice looking piece. Well worth whatever it cost, I am sure. The shaft dia. of the 8RT pulley is 5/8 in. The shaft for the shaft dia of the car is a smaller, I believe. |

I’ll add here that any info I’ve put here should be taken with a grain of salt! We are amateurs and haven’t even played machinists on TV. 8^)

Re: F1 Fan bearing
1948: Smart move. That chunk of aluminum alone would be at least $100, not to mention the labor and time. Money well spent.
