Default cotter pins

Does the cotter pin ever get loaded during operations. I don't mean sheared of by a mechanic. The pin detains the nut in place from vibration turning the nut, right? Shouldn't be much load on that.

In more than 60 years of working on automotive and aircraft engines, I have never seen a correctly installed cotter pin fail.

.

Cotter pins are only used to help insure one of Mr. Newton's laws....."That object which is without motion SHOULD remain motionless"....or, words to that effect. DD

It's just a oh shit pin. Better safe then sorry. Only used on bolts or pins you would not want to go loose. Use them. Some pins are used for areas like body to frame or radiators. Were springs are used to flex with road conditions. But neither would you like them to fall out. Much like safety wire on a fly wheel. Always good to check what condition your condition is in over time.

Modern equivalent is the nyla nut. I'll trust the cotter and the castle nut for another 100 yrs from now.
