Default 37 speedo cable replacement

Is it easier to replace the cable from the top or from underneath? Thanks!

If you only intend to replace the cable, not the sheath, then at least pull the sheath from the speedo, sit on the seat with a protective cover on your lap, and lube the cable as you push it in from the top. If you do that task correctly, your lap cover will be a mess. Ordinary grease will dry and harden, likely the reason your cable needs replacing now. Use Fifth Wheel Lube, your choice of brands, one available from NAPA is Lucas, 16oz bottle for $11.69.

I’m going to replace the complete cable with the housing.

IMO from the top with a friend underneath to help thread it thru the maze.

My concern is if it was easier to get a wrench on the lower end coupling from the top. It’s easy to see from the bottom, but a little tricky to get a pliers in there.

I think the only way to get at the lower connection at the turtle from the top is to remove the floor boards and the transmission cover. Once you are in that far no one should need to get under the car.

I installed the new cable and casing from the bottom, used a basin wrench to tighten the casing. Very easy, total time was about 40 minutes.

I initially used the biggest channel locks I had on the removal, needed a pliers with the longest handle possible. Then it dawned on me to use a basin wrench, made it very easy to tighten the casing. Just enough room to fit the wrench I might add.
