Default ‘34 Roadster vacuum wiper motor repair

I called Ficken, he said don’t send it, it’s a goner. Anyone know of someone who will attempt it? The arm turns full distance but with a lot of effort.

Rob Ficken has told me before that the issue is that the bodies warp with time and you can never get a good seal throughout the whole sweep with one end being to tight and the other to loose. I guess he sees so many that he can't fix that he prefers to see none Having said that lubrication may fix the problem and has for some of mine -Karl

It is true that chroming process can warp the body, it has to be done with a lot of care and there are areas on the body that should not be chromed. I also use Clean Sweep

I agree with fordor4 and Karl that a little lube might help. My '34 roadster had an electric windshield wiper motor on it when I bought it and I never liked the looks of it. In 1997 I bought an NOS chrome wiper motor from Mr. Ficken for $295. He told me that it was the last one he had. It worked fine for about three years but then began to act up. I squirted some solvent/lubricant into the motor and it fixed the problem and is still working well today.

I just got off the phone with Melissa at clean sweep, and she fully embrace the idea of repairing this rear wiper, she made no promises but had a very positive attitude about giving it try so I have sent it off and will update once I have it back

So Melissa with clean sweep fixed it perfectly! Cost a total of 110 bucks including shipping and she sent it back to me with the invoice and then I mail her a check, just like the old days. That other F guy told me it was junk and throw it away, he said it could never be fixed, please see the attachment of Melissa‘s invoice.

So it goes without saying she is the person to call for wiper repairs, well done!

Note her mention of smoothing the surface of the on/off switch to prevent vacuum leaks at the switch. That is often overlooked when restoring one of the era's Trico wiper motors, whether chrome-plated or not.

Clean Sweep has had to redo that guys work .So Kent told me yrs ago.Tho some are satisfied.

A little story: I needed some special wiper motor parts back when I lived in Hawaii.Kent says I'll trade you for some Macadamia nuts. Deal done!

He did my '33 std tudor wiper .I sent it and 2 wks later its back all rebuilt with a note to send a check. Now I'm in France mind you.

I've recently acquired a painted wiper motor for my 34 roadster (thanks to a hot tip from Deuce Lover). Anyway, I need to have it refurbished and chromed.

Does anybody happen to know who can handle the chrome side and knows what pieces/parts should actually be chromed and won't distort the casting? I don't want to screw this one up - it is nice!

Kent has been a friend of mine since 1973 and I don't think he personally does the work anymore, but he trained and may still advise Melissa. He told me getting the chrome work done for those open car wipers is the most difficult step now days. Sadly, Kent is having cognitive issues now.

I’m in the same boat as you. I have an NOS painted wiper motor so if you find someone who will tackle chroming one, I would like to know myself.
