Default oil restrictor

My engine has been machined and drilled and all that for a remote spin on filter, so that is what I will use. I have read on some of the post about a restrictor in the return line. Do I need one and what do I need?

thanks al

Never heard of a restrictor in the return line. Normally, on the original bypass system there is a restriction between the filter and the pressure port in the block. If you are running the "95%" system there is no restriction that I'm aware of

You need to know for sure how your engine oil system has been modified so that you can decide whether you need a “full” flow filter or a bypass filter.

A restriction orifice is used with a bypass filter system and is only on the supply side, never on the return side.

A full flow filter does not use a restriction orifice.

Thanks for the info. I am running flow flow so I will not worry about restriction.

Not to break your stones but just asking about installing a restrictor in the oil return line throws up some red flags. If you are going to modify the oil system make sure it's done correctly to provide proper lubrication.

What motor are you modifying and what has been done to the filtering system?

I am working on a 1950 8BA. The block was modified by the same guy that built this one. Unfortunately, he has passed and I cannot ask questions. I know by his notes that my engine was ran three hours on a test stand with no problems except a leaking water pump. You can see how he plumbed the filter, and there is another port beside the outlet hose from the block. Will that port work for the oil sending unit.

Yes. That port will work. That is the partial flow system (80%) ish.
I prefer that system.
To be 100% certain I have my sender on the down stream side of the filter. I'm not sure what style of filter mount you have, some have 4 ports. I drilled a hole in the filter casting and tapped it 1/8" NPT.

Thanks, I think I will tap my filter outlet to install the sending unit.

Just for info; I have and others (also on this site) have the restrictor in the return side of the factory oil filter. There is NOTHING acting as a restrictor upstream of the filter. It consists of a small hole (holes) drilled in the internal standpipe of the filter. As suggested by many you gotta know what system you have in place or you could get in trouble. With the bypass system you could have two restrictors flowing very little oil or none flowing way too much. Inspect every component. My 8BA's with this system are CDN engines.

I drilled/tapped the brass fitting that adapts the return hose to the block for the oil pressure monitor. I can't see the fitting in your picture clearly. I would like to see a close-up of those two fittings.

40 cpe Here is a picture of my engine with the two fittings. If you look close, you can see the other port below the left fitting. The left fitting is the outlet from the pump.

I would put the pressure sensor on the left fitting. Either tap a hole in the top of the elbow, or change the elbow for a Tee fitting.. That hose connects to the "OUT" side of the filter housing. Either end of that hose for the sensor will work.

OK That is what I will do. Can I just plug the other port below the right fitting?

Yes, you must plug that hole. If you look into that hole you should be able to see the block off plug that was put into the original oil gallery that converts your engine to the "80% full flow system.
The unplugged hole is where they gained access to cross drill the oil gallery that goes through to the pipe that runs down the center of the valve area. And feeds the remaining 80% of the engine.
