Default '39 Pickup Transmission

Is a '39 pickup V8 3 speed transmission (not V8-60) the same as the passenger car transmission? thanks.

On the outside yes....on the inside maybe. Ford was still building the 38 gearset into some 39 production. Most likely the pickup trucks and Standard Fords got 38 gears into the 39 model run. Of course, that particular trans could have been rebuilt at some time with the newer 39-48 gearset.

A check of the serial number will confirm the model year of the case. It should also have the 81A-7222 shifter housing with the double detents.

Well the shifter housing is 81A-7222 so I guess it's got the '39 pickup transmission it was born with. Looking down the spark plug holes things look pretty crusty so looks like the heads will have to come off to see what shape the block is in. By the way this is all about a '39 pickup rolling chassis I just bought with the complete drivetrain. Hoping the use the drivetrain for a T-V8 project.
