Default Rear / side mount spare tire & trunk rack

When 33 phaetons had 2 side mounted spare tires, did they ever have the rear spare also ? (making 3 spare tires on the car)

Did the side mounted spares ever have the steel covers on them ?

If the car does not have a rear mounted spare, did it use a different luggage / trunk rack ? the rack used when carrying a rear spare, leaves a lot of space for the spare tire. If you use that rack with no rear spare tire, the trunk box is positioned quite far away from the body.

Must have had a bunch of JCWhitney parts to have two side mtd spares......There is no part number for a 33 car side mtd spare however I have actually seen a 37 with a side mtd spare. I would guess some custom shop did the job.

Hmm.. twin side mounts were offered as an option on 32 cars weren't they ? so was it not an option on the 33's ? My car is a Right Hand Drive car. There is a 33 phaeton in Colombia which has twin side mounts too.

The side mount frames are not custom fabrication. They are Ford parts. The Right side frame on mine was broken. I advertised on the Ford Barn wanting a 33/34 phaeton side mount for the right hand side and PaulN sold me one. It matches the existing left hand side mount frame perfectly (same design)
Attached is a photo of the frame. Perhaps this will reveal what the year the frame is from ?

Twin Side Mounted Spares were offered as an Option on 1933 & 1934 Fords in Australia. The Bracketry is different from side to side, so it is original Ford & not a J.C.Whitney aftermarket item. Check out the triangular mount that has the Wheel Lugs, one is for the Right & the other for the Left Spares. These are Genuine Ford Parts. It is highly unlikely that a rear mounted Spare was offered in addition to the Twin Side Mounts.

I found photos of configurations which look odd.. have a look.

The Red Phaeton has the trunk positioned really far outside the body of the car. It seems to be configured to carry the rear spare and then the trunk rack behind it.

The black and white photo of a Tudor sedan is supposed to be a factory photo. The car clearly has the optional dual side mounts as well as the rear mounted spare. More interestingly, the side mounts have the steel tire covers which are usually seen on rear mounted spares.

The 2 roadsters also have side mounts with the tire covers.

Not offered here in the US and if you think so, post the part number. I have original parts books from 32 on. Also I believe the frame stampings may thave had those holes in all of them cause the commercial frame here had them.

"40-16035 Fender (front) R.H. (with well) 1933-34" and "40-16036 Fender (front) L.H. (with well) 1933-34" as written in the U.S. Chassis Parts Lists of the period. Look under FRONT FENDER.

Back to one of the original questions posed, the brackets for the luggage rack used with side-mounted spares are unique and quite different from the brackets used with rear-mounted spares. They do indeed place the rack much closer to the body as you would expect. Similarly, they cannot be used in conjunction with a rear-mounted spare.

P.S. The "frame" (Ford referred to them as "support, side wheel carrier and brace, side wheel carrier support) in your photo conform to the '33-'34 illustration in the U.S. Chassis Parts List for the right side components.

1933/1934 Fords with a Spare Wheel mounted in the passenger side fender is common on these model Fords in Australia. However, I have never seen one with the optional Metal Cover. What is less common are these models with Twin Fender Mounted Spare Wheels, though there are a few that came from the Ford Factory in Australia so equipped.
