1936 v8 oil change

how many quarts of oil should me 1936 ford take I am new I put three in and it is almost full. What is the 2nd plug right behind the drain plug, I opened it nothing came out

5 qts.Second plug is below the clutch/flywheel so nothing there.Make sure the cotter pin is in the small hole.

How many quarts came out in the drain? It might give you a clue as to the amount of sludge in the pan.

and are you sure you have the correct dipstick for 36? terry

J. Franklin,I hope that is not the problem .I only took about 3 quarts out of pan. Terry If someone has the size of the of the dipstick I could check. I have no way of knowing thank you guys.

Pull the pan and clean the sludge out,Check your oil pump pick up screen also.

Documentation provided with the 1936 cars called for 5 quarts of oil.

Engines can have build up of sludge inside. We've seen examples here on the 'Barn showing it can take up a lot of space. Over a quart of sludge removed from the oil pan (and the valve valley areas which is not part of this question). This is one explanation for quantity questions.

There are complications with dipsticks. There are several dipsticks that would fit in your tube. As I understand another complicating factor is there was a felt washer which would seal at the top of the dipstick/tube interface and if it's missing the stick sits lower in the pan.

I am starting the sludge is the problem. The speedo shows 90000 miles and without an oil filter on the motor would have sludge. being new to this era of Fords is a lot to learn. The members and this site is a god send. thank you.:

You might want to pull the intake also,then the pan and rinse it all out.

Many years ago I had a pleasure boat that had a 8CM V8 engine. The engine had a very good marine conversion, when I would service the engine, oil change etc., the engine would hold five quarts of oil. The engine developed some problems so I decided to replace it with a newly rebuilt engine. The engine was removed from the boat, we noted that the engine did not have a normal Ford pan, much larger and deeper.
When the pan was removed we found what appeared to be a large 'blatter type of object laying in the bottom of the pan. The object was opaque in color.
Close examination of the object reveled that the object was sticky/oil like, semi fluid like
We finally figured out that the substance was most likely some type of oil additive, something like a Motor Honey/STP. It would appear that a former owner had been using an oil additive which was put into a cold engine. which could have been subjected to extensive amounts of condensation, resulting in the additive not blending with the engine oil'

After the original marine pan was installed on the new engine, we found that the engine now held seven quarts of oil.

Any engine with a marine conversion will always have more oil capacity due to extra coolers and to ensure the oil pickup is lower in the fluid. If the boat takes a severe roll your oil pump is less apt to lose suction.

verytangled, i have a '37 fordor. iv'e replaced the felt washer on dipstick. i was wondering what thickness the original felt washer was. thanks,Tom.

I just recently changed the oil and filter on my '35 fordor sedan. The engine is a mostly original 21 stud, 85 hp that was rebuilt about 20 years ago. Bored 030" over, milled cast iron heads, adjustable lifters, a Mark Kirby, MCF, full flow oil filtering system that uses a modern spin on type oil filter/canister. It took ~ 4-1/2 quarts of oil to fill the systems.

Hi Everyone. farmertom, If I recall correctly learned about the felt washer from FordBarn member Kube several years ago, so I'm not certain of your answer.

The 37 engine in my 35 holds 4 quarts with no oil filter,and I know it clean,,,

I put 5 quarts in, no matter what the stick says. The only way it would be too full is if you had so much it was hitting the crank shaft, which I would guess would take a lot...like maybe 7 or 8 quarts, again just a guess. Too little, not good, slightly too much, no problem IMHO.

thanks very tangled,kube did just answer that felt dipstick query i had over on early ford v8 club site where i started discussion. he said close to3/16" and were dense wool. he had used the last one from a box of nos. thanks again,tom.
