Default Re: New tires

White walls are generally gum rubber with no carbon black added. Even though they are vulcanized along with the rest of the tire, the white wall has less strength and is softer than gum rubber with carbon black added. This quality of the rubber makes it vulnerable to ozone deterioration and road hazards. The white wall portion will not last near as long as the rest of the carcass.

They look good on some cars but they are more expensive and take more care to maintain.

When I took a tour of a tire manufacturing plant we were told that more care was put into the manufacture of white walls than black wall tires, and therefore they were a better tire. That was over 50 years ago, so who knows what changes have been made to the manufacture of tires since then.
