Default Valves, Which is best for the street .

So I'm looking at new valves for the 255. I know I need to put in hard seats on the exhaust side as the block is a 53. I'm wondering if stainless valves are the way to go or are the Chevy exhaust valves the better choice. I'm looking for longevity and getting the hp and economy up from stock. The stainless valves I've seen are dished and this seems like it would make the compression drop a bit. Am I correct in that line of thought? Thanks , Tim

I would think that stock Ford valves would be best for the street. Here's some good info.

The Chevy valves are about.060" longer than the Ford valves. Stainless valves are harrd on guides, unless they have a chrome stem.

Block should already have harden valve seats on a 53 block. But I could be wrong.

Most '53 car blocks do not have hardened seats actually. True truck blocks maybe different, not sure.

Ford pretty much did away with stellite seats by 1953 for cars. Truck blocks likely still had them if they are in fact a 1953 truck block. Ol' Ron has a point on stainless valves which make up most of the new parts available. The valve guides really should be fitted with bushings for stainless valves or have hard chrome stems as he mentioned previously. I've always found NOS replacement valves but they aren't as easy to come by now days.

The rotator type valves used in mid 1951 through the end of production may be harder to find than the standard flathead valve produced prior to that time but I haven't checked on that for quite a while. They have a two piece retainer and are longer that the early ones. A person can convert to early or use the late type but you have to have all the proper parts for the change over to the valves that a person wants. You also have to use the clearance adjustment values for the type used since they had different clearances.
