I added the socket to the engine stud to have the sideways pull on the stud as close to the top surface of the block as possible to decrease bending.

Wasn't sure is you just wanted the older engines. This picture was when I pulled and replaced the block for my 53' Merc.

yea I've about broke our garage rafters a few times now... Getting the model a engine out of my modern truck, getting 2 worm rearends out of my truck also and then moving things about. Hopefully don't need to lift anything heavy again with it!

I used to use 3 big long water pipes, bolted loosely at the top, to form a tripod. DON'T USE SUCH ON A CEMENT FLOOR, only in the DIRT!!!!!
Once, while it wuz RAINING, put a tarp over it & assembled an engine, in our TEEPEE!! I'm 1/8 Pawnee Indian, you know. BUT, never got to stay at the WIGWAM MOTEL, on OLD Route 66.
MANY years ago, I saw Chief & Uncle Pappy, pull a Model A motor, using a chain & a long pole!!!! They set it on the front crossmember & I balanced it, while they RESTED!

at first I used a braced garage rafter , but harbor freight was giving cherrie pickers away .
the top piece that can move the motor forward/backward is the handiest thing . now no help needed

The setup with the converted saw horse with extension 2X4s reminds me of the old days when I was a teenager, it is amazing that we didn't kill ourselves, or be killed by our parents. And attaching a chain hoist to the rafters of my parents garage and leaving a bolt in the motor mount attached by mistake, and wondering why the front of the car was rising instead of just the engine, then hearing the "crack" of the rafter. If you look closely over 55 years later you can still see the slight dip in the roof.. Those were the good old days! Well maybe not, but somehow we survived....
