1948 Super Deluxe 4 Door

Good Morning Folks - I bought a 48 Super Deluxe from a friend who's father passed - all original and his dad was the only owner. It needs work - but I can't start to begin without knowing the VIN - which I cannot find. The stamp on the body panel photo is attached, but I think it's not the VIN. Any advice is appreciated.

What's the title or the reg say for the id?

No that is not the vin. Possibly readable on driver's side top of frame rail between firewall and radiator. If transmission is original stamped at top of housing. Pull the floorboard up
to view.

Serial no. is on the frame rail left side also two other locations but the body most likely would need to come off to see those.

You didn’t say what state your in so getting the car registered to you will vary.

As you search for the serial number on the frame rail, be aware that the stamping is easily damaged by abrasives. Best to use a scotch-brite pad and some soapy water. The number is there to be found, just keep at it.

The ID number for those cars is generally found on top of the left frame rail right near the front crossmember. As mentioned do not use any harsh abrasives to attempt to clean the frame. I have found using mineral spirts paint thinner and medium steel wool will work.

Just click on the above link and scroll down to the frame picture, even though it shows a 1939 frame, the location of the serial # should be in the same place.

Number should start with 899A- or 87HA- if it a six cylinder.
Sometimes it helps if you shine a flashlight across the edge of the frame to see the numbers.

I named him "Clyde" (Bonnie and Clyde) due to the suicide doors ... he is a diamond in the rough, all original, no rust. Needs work, and I've had many offers, but I'm thinking I just can't let him go yet until I get him back to where my friend's dad wanted him to be before he passed.

That car looks pretty complete. Good luck with it. Did you locate the VIN? I had to remove the left front fender to get a good look at mine when I finally got around to licensing my '48 Tudor. It had to be inspected by the local Sheriff's dept for issue of title.

Serial number should be right where I have the area outlined. On an assembled car you may have to push the inner fender well outward to see all of it.

These two pictures may help you with the location. Note the three rivets that hold the front crossmember to frame rail. Also note that sometimes, the numbers can be difficult to read, as they were all stamped individually, by hand. Sometimes, you have to look VERY closely! Be patient....it IS there! It is possible that the actual location on your car MIGHT be farther back on the frame than this location near rivets. There should be a stamped "STAR" on each end of the number, SOMETIMES very hard to read. Coop

Great pictures, V8COOPMAN. I just went out to my 42 Ford and after some major cleaning I found next the crossmember. Couldn't find it before as I was looking too far forward. It confirmed the number on the transmission was the same. Made my day!

I'm glad that I could help you nail the location.

For those folks NOT familiar with seeing these numbers in person, on a real-world chassis, this example is a good one to show just how difficult it CAN be to locate and verify these numbers. The guy that stamped those numbers could have been a wimp, with little ability to SWING a hammer. Or, he could have been afraid of his aim and merely swung that hammer rather meekly, so that it would not hurt TOO much should he miss the mark. Nevertheless, for those not used to viewing these numbers, this example most-definitely shows the star at each end of number (albeit very lightly stamped). The entire sequence in this picture is "☆I8-4876789☆". The two stars do not appear very clearly, but being familiar with these types of numbers and knowing where to look, they are BOTH actually visible in this picture. The two stars in THIS case are visible at the 11:00 o'clock position above the left-most rivet, as well as the 11:00 o'clock position above the right-most rivet. Just trying to show how difficult it CAN be to find and read these identification number sequences. Coop

I have found that licking your finger to get it wet and then rubbing it on the indistinguishable portions of the stamped numbers sometimes makes them stand out.
