Is anyone currently selling installation kits?
Or, where can I find installation parts

Yes, but he is on the West Coast. Sells high quality kits. The price tag is up there particularly when you factor in freight to Indiana. I'll PM you his contact information tomorrow.

Sent a PM this morning.

There used to be several guys doing this but the hard parts have to come from the salvage yards. Tremec (Mexico) stopped manufacturing parts for them. Ford's policy is 10-years on parts availability. After that, it's time to hit the salvage yards for parts. Early 1987 was the last use of these transmissions. They are only going to get more rare as time goes by.

I have an F150 3+1 installed using a Macs Speed Shop bell housing and found it very satisfactory over many miles. Whilst he is based in New Zealand, I believe that he ships to the States or has an agency in the States. Contact Graeme McNeil at: [email protected]

There is a fellow on the early ford v8 classified site that goes by krylon32 . He sells kits for T5's that would probably work for the 4 speed as well.

The two transmissions are completely different. The T170 RTS is part of the family of 4-speeds that evolved from the cast iron top loader RUG transmissions. They changed to an aluminum case and various types of rail and turret shift set ups to operate 3rd gear in the 4th gear location and overdrive gear in the old 3rd location. This requires a reversing rocker shift mechanism that makes the design very unique.

The best feature of the T170 FT TOD design is the location of the shift tower. The feature that can be problematic is the rocker shift mechanism. Retention of the pin in there has to be in proper position and good condition or it can slip out of place. A person can't expect it to shift like an old top loader 4-speed.

wensum: Mac's speed shop in New Zealand also sells the rear plate for the RTS transmission which is needed when you remove the tailshaft housing and shorten the mainshaft.
