Default 1939 Ford Grill How to clean, polish SS or Chrome

My 1939 grille looks dirty and dingy. Before I attack it with a cleaner I need to know what others may have done and also whether the shiny part is Chrome or Stainless? And is there any hope to bring it back to showroom condition? Thanks

Vertical grill bars are SS. The best way to have them come out like you want them is to have them buffed on buffing wheels with rouge IF they are nice and straight and not dented and scratched. Depending on the tools you "may" have you can try doing with what you have and some rouge on the car....It will look better BUT not to the level that you are most likely looking for. Youtube will show you "some" methods and material you might want to try IF you have the equipment!!! Pictured is a piece of SS trim I fixed and shows the end finish....This was my first attempt at fixing and polishing SS. I have since refined my process (2 files and at least 6 levels of sandpaper and two different liquid products) and learned more technique....it is a long process with most steps that cannot be skipped to get a quality result!!!

Just for info the grille center piece is diecast metal and not stainless. If it has issues it will need to be rechromed.

I polished the SS trim, hub caps and grill on the 39 Merc with my 3" air grinder and some grey and white rouge and a 3" wool roloc buff pictured below. NOT concourse BUT maybe show at least what it might look like. Hopefully it conveys!!!

For a quick job try rubbing some steel wool then toothpaste on the stainless.

I found this to be a good reference and Caswell is a great source for polishing items.

Scotchbrite pads work pretty well on SS, from my experience. They don't scratch as much as Steel wool.
