Removing Engine from '40 Ford Question
Using a standard size engine hoist with a boom, is it possible to remove an 8BA engine from a 40 Ford car WITHOUT
removing the HOOD, FRONT SHEET METAL or GRILLE? I've done it by removing only the hood and radiator but, am wondering if it's really necessary. Anyone done it that way? Thanks, JIM |

Re: Removing Engine from '40 Ford Question
Don't know about an 8ba but I have removed the 40 engine from my wagon after only removing the radiator and leaving the hood on. l left the trans in the car with a jack under it and used 4 line up pins (long bolts with heads cut off and screwdriver slots cut in the ends) when installing the motor. This was to fix a junk new TO bearing that lasted 7 miles. Was pretty easy as I unbolted the exhaust manifolds from the block and left the exhaust system intact.

Re: Removing Engine from '40 Ford Question
a tape measure would tell you. 1st you would need to mount as close as possible to the motor to reduce the height needed, then once free of the tranny you can start going up so you will gain clearance as you go forward. never done it on a 40, just "thinking out loud". i'll bet kube has some thoughts about this

Re: Removing Engine from '40 Ford Question
why take a chance of damage if you just take the pivot bolts off the hood you do not change the hood fit

Re: Removing Engine from '40 Ford Question
Is it necessary? Removing the radiator and hood makes life way easy. Like the Duece
said unbolt manifolds and leave it -better than fooling with nasty exhaust always frozen pipe bolts. The hood not heavy just two people each with a wrench = hood over your shoulders no damage done. Whatever do not remove engine and transmission with the common cherry picker cause it will take a nose dive unless you have the high end picker that the front wheels slide way out or you need somebody to stand on the picker back, that turns this into three people one to stand on it and two to pull it out LOL Thats a chain fall job. sam |

Re: Removing Engine from '40 Ford Question
I've taken a 59A style motor from my 40 coupe without removing anything except the radiator. Mine was a deluxe model. I did take out the trans cover. If you undo the hood supports the hood will open higher than normal and in my case I tied it back to the rear bumper with a rope.
You have to attach the hoist to the motor very low down. Mart. I found a pic: Last edited by Mart; 05-20-2020 at 08:14 AM. |

Re: Removing Engine from '40 Ford Question
Seems like more risk to damage something than it's worth even if it can be done.

Re: Removing Engine from '40 Ford Question
I just changed a 8ba in a 40 pickup. Took out the radiator and the hood off
I did as mentioned above and took the manifold off the motor and left them in the chassis with the exhaust. I also took the oil filter , carburetor , fuel pump with stand and distributor off . The less stuff to get hung up on something and had to swap all that stuff to the new motor anyway. I also have a I beam with a chain hoist and trolley which is way easier then a cherry picker. Junk cars i pull motors with a forklift.... A word of advice, sweep the floor before you try to roll the cherry picker....the tiniest piece of anything will stop you in your tracks and can be deadly |

Re: Removing Engine from '40 Ford Question
Thank you all very much for sharing your experience and knowledge.
Thanks, Mart, for posting that photo. My decision is pending as there's a strange "tinny" sound coming from the engine that comes and goes at idle. Great oil pressure and runs smooth. Can't figure out what it is. Last time I removed the engine was in 1972 with a chain fall. I removed the hood myself, back then when I was 29 and back was fine. See photo of engine back then. Re: Removing Engine from '40 Ford Question
Yes. I have done it several times. Did nothing but remove the radiator. Left the transmission in, unbolted the exhaust from the block only. If you look at Mart's photo, he did not need to unbolte the hood.

Re: Removing Engine from '40 Ford Question
I too have that KRW tool Ken has that fits in the valley and it is quite handy, quick to put in and take out, those 2 pins keep it from moving.

Re: Removing Engine from '40 Ford Question
My preference on my '39 is to remove grill and radiator only and take everything out the front...and keep everything as low as possible, relative to shop crane.....swaying engine over fenders makes me really nervous!! Putting '39 grill back in is an easy one person job. Putting hood back on is a two person for me!!

Re: Removing Engine from '40 Ford Question
I did it a long, long time ago - in the late 80s.lI think. Removed the stock flattie and 3-speed and then later installed a 350/350 combo. Engine hoist hook was more to the back of the engine, no radiator installed, most accessories off the motor. The tail of the T350 was just high enough foe me to get close, pick up and and swing the tailshaft in whole pulling the hoist towards the car. I was about 38 or so and I was n pretty good shape to do it. Once the motor and trans were in the engine bay I used my floor jack under the tail shaft of the tranny to pull the combo back as I jockeyed it into position. Wishbones were split and the T350 trans mount was not yet bolted in and the wishbones were spread out .....
These days it’s easier to leave the hood on but pull off the nose imho ...... too old to attempt this now! Lol!

Re: Removing Engine from '40 Ford Question
I removed the engine in my sedan without taking the hood off, I always remove the carb and use axle straps that are used on trailer tie downs; put them on the exhaust manifolds and also remove the radiator and out the engine comes.

I know what you're up to! You're wanting to throw one of those ARDUN thingies in there. We've seen you lusting over there on that currently-running ARDUN thread. I wonder if those valve covers will clear the inner fender panels at the front on a '40? DD |

Re: Removing Engine from '40 Ford Question
Ok V8, you got me.
Please be the first to donate to my pending (all done) ARDUN GO FUND ME page. I recall that in 1995 I went to the Columbus NSRA show and there was a real steel '32 Ford roadster with a full tilt ARDUN in it for sale for $35K. It was blue and it was really nice. Seemed like a fortune then. A fellow named Dick Blaine was also there with his red '32 Ford Ardun powered beauty. Wasn't for sale. He was nice and told me all about it as it was the first time I ever saw an ARDUN. Wonder if he still has it? |

"DUN" just fine, keeping all his ducks in a nice straight line. His car is a beauty and a piece of history. A work of art and mechanical wonderment. If I were ever to be so lucky, I'd hope to be just as plucky. Got to go check my " ARDUN Go Fund Me" page again. So far, I've got zero. Maybe the PPP check will soon arrive so I can use "the people's money" to fund my pet project just like the politicians do. Last edited by 19Fordy; 05-23-2020 at 10:09 AM. |

OK, I guess you win (kind'a sorta) with your 1,2,3! But what good is it to spend $50K on an engine that ya can't "beat-up" on a little? Ronnieroadster sure ain't reluctant to "whang" on his Arduns every now and then. Ya know, you could always build another one for days when Momma decides to stay at home! Joking aside though, the one you have created there sure is SLICK! DD |

Re: Removing Engine from '40 Ford Question
Thanks guys, to be honest, I do push the pedal once in awhile. No, not as gutsy as a standard tranny though. However, adequate. Don’t think my pocketbook could stand another ARDUN Since my ARDUN heads are first gen and serialized sequentially, you can bet there is a lot of TLC. I applaud Ronnie and learned from him. Oh, bragging rights: I have an original that is still running in a ‘53 and yes, I take the hood off when removing the engine.

Re: Removing Engine from '40 Ford Question
The problem is not getting the engine out, it's getting it back in. We pulled the 221 out of my dads 1939 deluxe but fought with it, getting it back in. While pulling it out, the engine pulled towards you, when putting it back in, you will fight with lining up the trans to the back of the motor because it sits back some. We pulled the front bumper and grill, it went in easily. While the bumper are off, replace your bumper gaskets (rubber bushing around the bumber rails, cheap fix).
