'37 trunk handle problem
The trunk handle on my '37 opens the trunk either in the lock or unlocked position. The car is new to me and the handle was held on by a flat washer, a lock washer and nut. What am I missing?

Re: '37 trunk handle problem
The 1937 trunk handle has a tab that extends when the lock is turned that intersects with a notch in the truck lid to prevent the handle from turning. I suggest removing the trunk handle to see if the tab is extending when the lock is turned or if the notch in the trunk lid is damaged.

Re: '37 trunk handle problem
Thank you Zeke. I understand from BobDrake.com that I should have a special washer that is keyed along with a nut to hold the handle on. I don't see the notch in the trunk lid however as it has been replaced with a fiberglass lid.

Can anyone post a photo of the notch in the trunk that Zeke is talking about?

Re: '37 trunk handle problem
Here is a pic of the 37 handle .The small square pawl is what sits in the notch of the deck lid and that is in the locked position. Pull your handle off and on the lid is a round hole and a notch off to the side.

Re: '37 trunk handle problem
The above item is probably the culprit; the small round pin is probably sheared. You are lucky the lock pawl was in the un-locked position when the failure occurred. The lock cylinder must be removed to replace/repair the cylindrical cam part. Let me know if you would like to service the handle.

Re: '37 trunk handle problem
Here is a picture of the notch on my 1937 Ford 5W coupe; the notch is at 9 o'clock. Hope this helps you with your project.
Ps: I put a repro trunk handle on this car back around 1966 and the locking tang was on the opposite side of the handle, so my trunk has two notches in the hole in the trunk lid, my finger is covering the notch at 3 o'clock so not to confuse the issue. I plan to put the original handle back on the car since I now have a key for it and it has aged better than the repro handle. |

Re: '37 trunk handle problem
"replaced with a fiberglass lid." His lid is fiberglass.......NOT steel.

Re: '37 trunk handle problem
Well, guess this is my problem. No notch in my trunk lid.
Its fiberglass so perhaps it was left out or widened out to fit the handle. Another issue is that the part that projects from the reproduction lock and fits into the notch is not square as in your previous photo which I presume is an original. Thanks for your help gentlemen. Quote:

Re: '37 trunk handle problem
Macraekw, it looks like your lid has some thickness where the handle mounts, it would probably work if the lid is over 1/4" thick. Be sure to install the gasket that goes between the handle and the lid, that should keep the handle from tearing up the paint.
