1934 Ford 5W Rear Window assembly
All,
Anyone have the assembly instructions for the rear window on a 34 5W Coupe. I have the wood frame figured out, but here is where Im lost? 1. How does the drain pan attach to the window frame and the package tray. 2. How does the roll down window guide and frames fit. I have some pics of stockers that are together but they dont show how it all ties together. Pics would help. Thanks |

Re: 1934 Ford 5W Rear Window assembly
Could you do a sort of dummy run? Just with the minimum of bolts and screws?
Just find a method that works and repeat it assembling everything correctly?? Something like that. Mart. |

Re: 1934 Ford 5W Rear Window assembly
The wood frame around the window goes down inside the drain pan. So you should be able to mount the regulator to the wood and install the window side channels to the wood before fitting down inside drain pan. The front lip of the drain pan screws to the top back edge of the package tray. I used a couple of wood screws to secure the back of the drain pan to the wood window frame that faces the trunk lid.

Re: 1934 Ford 5W Rear Window assembly
To install the window, you remove the horizontal piece of the wood framework which is attached with three screws on each side. Now you have necessary clearance to install the glass and its horizontal channel in the vertical channels on either side of the window opening. Next you attach the window crank mechanism on the inside of the horizontal wood section with the three screws on each end (that you removed in the first step). Next, insert the spring loaded end of the mechanism in the slot in the bottom of the horizontal channel at the bottom of the glass. You'll likely need to hold the glass at the very top of its travel to accomplish this last step and fiddle a little bit to find the hole at the end of the slot, but it will go together. Lastly, you can reinstall the horizontal wood section with the three screws on each end back on to the framework.
Before doing any of the above, make sure that you've installed the black foam rubber weatherseal along the top of the opening for the glass to seal against. |

Re: 1934 Ford 5W Rear Window assembly
There are only a couple of small brads that go between the drip tray and the wood surround. The tray is held in place, under the wood surround, in the rear with two brackets that go to the two hinges and in the front the lip on the tray is above the package shelf with (7) 1/4-20 flat head countersink head screws holding the shelf to the tray. So the wood surround first, then the glass channel and top seal, the glass and window regulator and two front wood pieces, then after the wood is done and the window works, the drip tray, and finally the package shelf. The shelf also is screwed to the wood under the quarter windows, two wood screws on each side.

Re: 1934 Ford 5W Rear Window assembly
I hope I'm not hi-jacking the thread, was just about to post the same question, I'm at the same place with my 34, and have a couple of additional questions How far from the body is the window frame mounted ? Where are the window side channels /channel brackets positioned ? Are there any seals between the window wood framing and the body ? I have a new wood frame/mod. a 4 bolt regulator and channel/ seals but having difficulty positioning things so window will clear the regulator when winding up etc .. thanks...ken

Re: 1934 Ford 5W Rear Window assembly
I used 3/4" thick wood strips between the metal window surround and the wood frame so the window channel would fit snug between both. Then removed the strips once the wood was tacked to the window metal surround. The top of the window opening has a sponge rubber seal and the two sides have the felt channel. To hold the felt channel in place, lower on the two sides are metal channels. The metal channels are tacked to the wood and the felt channel go through them.

Re: 1934 Ford 5W Rear Window assembly
Regarding your regulator/horizontal clearance problem, which is not uncommon with new wood, you may have to relieve the wood frame work where the regulator attaches to bring the regulator inward slightly thereby creating more clearance.

Re: 1934 Ford 5W Rear Window assembly
bringing back an old thread, i have a couple questions. 1, what is the extra bracket i have in the center? leftover from the rumble latch? my 3w is now a trunk model. next, the brackets in the corners where it attaches to the trunk hinge area, were they welded to the pan or bolted? i need to make those L shaped brackets. last, is that an original window riser? i have never seen one with two arms like that. thanks, skip also, how far up does the drain pan cover the wood frame where they meet?

Re: 1934 Ford 5W Rear Window assembly
the bracket in the center looks like a support bracket to me for the drain tray.

Re: 1934 Ford 5W Rear Window assembly
thanks tj, thats what i initially thought too, but when looking at photos of the aftermarket pans i see no bolt holes in that area, like johnny said" when we went to put in the bolts, all the holes were gone! also, i have no wood on the sides yet, so i need to know how far up the pan sits into the wood frame as that controls the package tray height.

Re: 1934 Ford 5W Rear Window assembly
The only foam rubber involved is at the top with a slight upside down U shape that the top edge of the glass fits into when the window is closed. It is the same thing as is used at the top of the door glass (and quarter windows in sedans) and readily available as an accurate reproduction in various lengths. It was originally glued in place.

Re: 1934 Ford 5W Rear Window assembly
Thanks David! Appreciate the quick response.
Is there anything along the bottom between the glass and body window frame?

Re: 1934 Ford 5W Rear Window assembly
no, water runs down into the drain pan, no lip on the rubber that the glass sets in. dont be a dumb bell like me and set the side channels too close to the wood frame so the garnish molding wont seat against the wood. had to do it twice at my house
