Default door check straps on a 32

I was looking at a friends 32 roadster yesterday and noticed the check straps are underneath the door panel and kick panel instead of on top like a model a is this correct or should they be mounted on the front with the chrome piece on the leather?
Thanks

You are correct. The 32 Ford open car check straps are the same design as the 30 - 31 Model A with the strap and retainer plate on top of the trim panel. The only difference between them is the '32 check straps are slightly longer. On both the Model A and '32 the straps are made of fabric reinforced rubber. They are not leather as offered in some reproduction parts catalogs. See page 15-11 for a photo in 1932 Ford Restoration Guide by Dave Rehor.

Not that long ago Bob Drake offered them. The texture and material were right, but the color was somewhat off (too light).

Overall length of 32 Ford open car check straps is 8 7/8". Spacing for the inboard mounting holes is 6" between them. A second pair of holes is 1 3/16" outboard of these. When installed in the car the ends are folded over so the holes are in alignment. The folded end is then secured with screws and clamp.

Model A's are slightly shorter than 32's. Sorry, but I do not know by how much.
