That is a "Loaded" question. What body styles?, what sort of condition are both cars?? Do both cars have the original Mercury motors etc etc??? I can ALSO tell you that there have been a "few" 39 & 40's for sale recently (including one in the above post) and I believe in the "SWAP" section here on the barn. There was an extremely nice 40 4 door (on the EFV8 Club web page) not too long ago and it had started at around the $20K mark and gotten down to $16K and to my knowledge no takers. SO if that helps any!!!

I know its not a 39 BUT a 40 but its a "really" sweet 40 and has lowered the price now to just under $14,000. https://www.oldcaronline.com/1940-Me...e-ID842358.htm

I own a 39 Mercury Town Sedan. I'm not a four door guy but I have history with this car. In 1967 at age 13 using paper route money, purchased this car (with Dad's blessings) from the original owner for 150 bucks. It was a solid car, all original running, driving car. About 2 years later having lost garage space I was told I had to sell it because it was too nice to sit outside (Dad was right). Car was sold to a car collector friend of the family for $650.00. I spent the next 45 years trying to buy "my Merc" back and ultimately purchased it from his estate for $10,000.00. I have replaced tires, all brakes, wiring harness, rebuilt shocks, carb, Skip's water pumps, Bubba distributor, front and rear springs, etc, etc. The car runs and drives nicely, I have a Columbia overdrive I could install, but after all is said and done, it probably is still a $10,000 to $14,000 car. Any opinions?

I attempted to post some pics of the Merc, a process that always has worked for me before, but upload failed due to "missing security token", got me on that one.

In my opinion, the market is VERY soft. Too many of us old guys dying off, and the younger crowd largely doesn't care. The models that I follow, are heading south. And, when I check on something, it's not sold (months later). The Horseless Carriage crowd is especially affected. And, of course, there are still a lot of 'dreamers' that advertise in Hemming's, using yesterday's prices. On the models that I follow, it's easy to separate the dreamers, from those that really want to sell.
A couple of my friends, both professional appraisers, have both confirmed it's their opinion of a very soft market. One car in particular that I have an interest in... a few short years ago, it was probably a 65-70K Dearborn car. The appraisers both say it MIGHT bring 45-50 today. And, the owner has been seeing offers in the 23-25 range. I guess what I'm saying, beware. (obviously, opinion)

bobH,
Oh, I completely agree, the type of cars we like here, have an aging, decreasing population of buyers. Regarding my 39 Merc as mentioned, I have a Columbia overdrive and all the controls, about $3000.00 worth of stuff. If I do install it, will be because I want to, not because it will make it worth more because I doubt it would. Now I enjoy having and driving old cars, and if pricing continues to trend downward......... perhaps I might still be able to buy my dreamed of fourty Ford coupe!!

FYI: I recently saw a very nice restored 39 Mercury at a consignment shop in Minnesota. Hooked On Classics is a reputable outfit, I do not work there, just trying to find an owner for a really nice rare car. Sale is to settle an estate. The guy screwed up in my opinion. He spent way to much on a four door, then painted it red. It looks like new, but the color choice is questionable.

Seems odd that the same number of Sedan Coupes and convertibles is the same.
If you want to buy a copy here's a very good buy.

This great looking 1939 Mercury Town Sedan resides in Queensland. I believe that it has since been sold after the owner pictured passed away last year. Notice that it has the Accessory 1939 Mercury Hubcaps.

A close-up shot of the Accessory full Stainless Steel Hubcap for the 1939 Mercury. These hubcaps are rare and desirable.

Before and After shots of an original Survivor Australian 1939 Mercury Town Sedan. Judge for yourself if the big dollars spent were worth it? I don't think so.

The rear of the same Survivor 1939 Mercury Town Sedan, Before and After shots. Is this an improvement from the Original?
