Re: I'm Baffled by this!
Ahh, NOPE.
That slinger should be facing inward. D.J., I wasn't even looking at the gear, but you are correct, it is in backwards!! I sure hope that is NOT in the car already!!

See, there we ALL go again, referencing something that it isn't. I quit, I will not post again without ALL the information.
Just because it is in a Model A case, don't mean it's Model A.

Re: I'm Baffled by this!
Would a BACKWARDS gear give you 2 REVERSES?

Re: I'm Baffled by this!
The "backwards" 1st/rev slider gear allows room for the 2nd / 3rd Synchro ring "slider" and bronze synchro rings.

Re: I'm Baffled by this!
Sorry for any confusion I may have created. I am attempting to troubleshoot a noise problem in 2nd gear on my Mitchell Synchronized Transmission. I also posted a follow-up to GASSERBOB asking him if he was able to solve his noise problem with the Mitchell, here's his post:
https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=225267 I have a phone call in to Steve at Mitchell. It know the gear being reversed is correct on a Mitchell. I'm concerned about the baffle. Because I drained the oil and it appears gray in color & I'm concerned about possible metal particle contamination. I know on a stock 3 speed, if the baffles are in backwards they will scrape against the bearing shell surface and cause metal particles to be present in the oil. I will post a reply after I speak to the folks at Mitchell. |

Re: I'm Baffled by this!
Looking at the original photo it does look like the baffle is in backwards. The baffle has a step in it so that when the inner part is up against the base of the bearing the outer part should have a gap of about 1\16" away from the outer part of the bearing. When in backwards the outer edge of the baffle would be against the rotating part off the bearing and it will grind metal and possibly make some noise.

Re: I'm Baffled by this!
I agree that the baffle seems to be backwards. I put a rare earth magnet in the pockets of the drain and fill plugs. This will attract any metal particles.

Re: I'm Baffled by this!
My Mitchell was extra "whiney" in second gear when I first started using it, but with some use, it got more and more normal sounding.

Re: I'm Baffled by this!
Hi, Getting back to everyone on the noise issue and this "baffle". First of all, it is not a baffle or slinger like used in the original transmission. This is used in a Mitchell transmission only and it is strictly a spacer. I have attached photos of both side of the spacer, you will see they are the same. The spacer is designed this way so that there can be no error when it is installed.
Regarding the noise, I remoeved and dis-mantled the Mitchell transmission and discovered defective roller bearings. The same type of problem that has occurred on newly manufactured rear wheel roller bearings is now occurring on transmission roller bearing. They are manufactured very poorly. Mitchell has been excellent with their response & support. They sent me replacement shafts and bearings. When replacing roller bearings on the Model A, try to find NOS. I will be creating a new post with more details on the subject. |
