Horn/Light Switch Rod
Hello All!
I am using a repro. Light Switch and Rod (all I have), but the rod seems a bit long to fit the switch. Is it me or do I need to trim some from the rod? How much and from where? My Husband is in a wheelchair with Ataxia, so I am doing this on my own and any help is really needed. Thanks! Patty |

Re: Horn/Light Switch Rod
there are 3 sizes of the rods. The one you have might be longer than the one you need. Do not cut the end, or your horn will not work. Most parts catalogs have the three dimensions printed in the part description.
BTW, most repro rods will need to have the diameter of the shaft filed a touch smaller up near the top so the last 1/2 inch will fit into the steering wheel |

Re: Horn/Light Switch Rod
Hi,
Thank you for your thoughts on this. The Rod is already in the wheel, so I guess it was done. The Rod will not come all the way out because of the roof,(wish it was a Roadster) so I can not try for a shorter Rod. I have this set-up to work with, if it can be done. Thanks. Patty |

Remove the steering column from the car and do it right...as Pat said...get the right size rod otherwise you will be fighting it all the way. Pluck |

Re: Horn/Light Switch Rod
Hello,
Yes, I think your right, but it is much more job then I can do right now. I think I can do some temp kind of things till then. I think I remember a old clamp-on type under the steering wheel Horn Button and a old dash Light Switch from our DeSoto in the tool box Thanks. Patty |

Re: Horn/Light Switch Rod
hell just lossen the bolts that mount you collum on dont even take it all the way out just losin it enough so u can pull the collum down and over so u can pull the light switch rod out your back window. before u pull it out for good though make sure u mesure how much the light switch rod comes out of the bottom so u know how much shorter to buy your next. of and thoughs repro light switches suck i las mine short out on me (no fuse) and burn up my wireing had to wrap all the connections inside with electical tape and just last night it started doing it again to me so ya watch out with thoughs

Re: Horn/Light Switch Rod
Patty,
Find a local Model A club, go to a meeting, and explain your problem. You will have a team at your door and they will take care of this in a single day. Don't be shy. Model A people love to show off what they know, and are always eager to help another Model A'er. Here is a site that lists the Colorado Model A clubs: http://www.mafca.com/chapters/CO.html Let us know how you do.

Re: Horn/Light Switch Rod
Thank You for the idea. I am a member of the local club, but I live a bit away
from other member's.(over an hour plus drive from most) So most project's are mine alone with some friends. My spouse has always had his own vintage autos (started with a 1916 Autocar Truck at 13) and I see this as a outlet for him, so he is not just "stuck" in his wheelchair. Patty |
