Default Adventurous aussies

On a recent thread I commented on how adventurous Aussies can be, well seeing is believing. This trip was undertaken in 1979. Not sure if you would call it adventurous or madness.

I love travelling in that sort of country. You haven't properly experienced nor understand a Model A (or other era car) until you have. There are also decent runs done in NZ.
At the 5 minute mark in the video, anyone can see why at least I insist on an air cleaner yet I've seen some on this forum express disdain for the notion.
Thanks for the post, Runnerbun

Here is a link to a map of the route.

you have to add Cape York Peninsula and you will see the route

[QUOTE=160B;1406065]That was a trip!!!

There are those amongst us who still do trips like that. Runnerbun and I are amongst them, though we haven't done much together.
Why don't some of you guys get a group together? I'm sure we can organise guides. Imagine the stories you can tell when you get back.

I have been on a run with runnerbun and admire the "down under attitude towards driving their vehicles" !!!

I can't understand why you guys don't do much of it. It's easier for you to get whatever parts you need than for us, fuel is cheaper and there are plenty of you.

Crowded roads filled with bad drivers is one big damper.

Just tonight someone was tailgating me and blew his horn because he had to slow down when I slowed to make a left hand turn. Some days you just wish there was open season on idiots.

I understand where you are coming from Tom, some people insist on rushing through their lives and go at full pace in everything they do. As if life isn't short enough as it is. That is one reason why I enjoy driving the Model A. and enjoying a slower pace of life.
We are very fortunate to have a great deal of wide open spaces to get away from the busy city areas where most of the idiots live.

Awesome bulldust footage. I bet some of that dust is still in those cars, nearly 40 years later! Someone should merge this thread with the Trailer Queens thread!

These guys sure earnt their bragging rights.

Lawrie, if the car is still about all these years later, that proves that these cars can take it. Maybe its today's drivers who can't.
I bet the guys (and girls) who did that trip have retold the story plenty of times over a drink, all to the awe of the uninitiated.

I have been aware of that trip as I have personally known some of the participants. But this is the first time I'd seen the movie. All spoke of the the terrible Bull Dust and how it got into everything even into the Differential past seals.
One thing that stood out to me was the number of woman and children that went along for the experience.
Lawrie, are you referring to the late Bill Turners pickup. Bill was a great guy and a great loss to the Gladstone Vintage Car Community. How many of the other vehicles are still in Gladstone.

And still using their bragging rights???

Have any of you guys given any thought yet to how you are going to get to the nest National at Murray Bridge? If I put my mind to it, I could be there in one day's driving.
Lawrie, maybe you could go via our place.

October 2018, yes?

Maybe the three of you should do the Great Ocean Road scenic route after leaving Synchro's, which ends at Warrnambool, where I could join you? I have a goal to make this trip.

Just thinking....

Yep, a great way would be the coast road all the way down and around, then across the ferry at Sorrento, the great ocean road and back thru the goldfields area.

I know the roads well and all the best sights to see.

Nice! Might even buy one of those famous vanilla slices at Sorrento. Access to Sorrento is easy from our place - straight down East Link and the Peninsular Freeway. Don't stand between me and a Sorrento vanilla slice.

Bull dust looks like the alkali dust in southern oregon. With moisture it softens to peanut butter consistency, plus it is usually deep. Peat dust is also fun.

Hard to imagine that, that part of Australia gets a huge amount of rain in the wet season and becomes a no go zone even for the best of Four Wheel Drive vehicles. The roads are very much improved today but it still provides quite a challenge for the those that attempt it.
