Testing gas tank on 30 pickup
Good morning guys. Im to the point where Im going to be shooting the cab and want to make sure my gas tank is leak free before installing back on the cab. I didn't notice leaks before removing it, but I just want to make sure. I did buy a quart of etcher and sealer, but Im hearing this really might not be the best choice. How do you test the tank?

Re: Testing gas tank on 30 pickup
Here's how we do/did it. Fill with approximately ½ gallon of water, We have a waterjetted plate that covers the gas gauge hole and affixed with the two screws. Install a non-vented gas cap with an extra rubber gasket. Install an eighth pipe thread fixture that has a valve and a gauge into the fuel valve hole. Pressurize the tank to less than 5 lbs and shut off the valve. Listen for leaks or rotate the tank. If there is a leak, the water will seep out. If this is too much trouble, just statically test the tank with a liquid in it.

Re: Testing gas tank on 30 pickup
as Brett says, no more than 5# of air in tank. ive taken mine to my tire store, pressured the tank and had it put in the tank where they check tubless tires for leaks, they have a ram over the water tank that is used to push tires under water, workd good on the gas tank also

Re: Testing gas tank on 30 pickup
Looked in the tank last night with a pen light. The rust is so light Im just going to etch the tank and seal it with alcohol resistant sealer. The thing didn't leak before I pulled it so Ill be fine.
