A couple of 59a Engine Queries rebuild.
Machinist is almost there for 59a short block completion.
1: The clearance fuel pump push rod to bush is noted at 20 thou and he is wanting a 5 thou, ie replace the bush. Is this a big deal? 2: Oil pan freeze plugs 4 pcs, new ones to be fitted. Just to tap them in with nil sealer? Or freeze down for easy fit and sealer to use? 3:Valves, Is there a limit heel area of valve stem can be ground before hardning at this area is compromised? Appreciate all advice. This oneis almost ready for home time to my place Hanging out to get this one completed. Phil NZ |

I'll have a stab.
1, Dunno but it sounds like a new bush would be a good idea. 2, The plugs are domed. You put them in place and tap them (sort of) flat which expands the diameter. Don't know if sealant should be used. 3, I took lots off the valves on the crusty Flatty. The material is tough all the way through, not case hardened. |

When I put the core plugs in place (as Mart described) I used some red Loctite as added insurance against their coming loose and leaking.

Please see reply from Michael at 3rd Generation who I purchased the valves from. Phil, On these valves there really is not limit. While the Manufacturer does not give specs, I have noticed when grinding the stems I have accidentally went way to far on my valve grinding machine and noticed they seem to be the same hardness throughout. The machinist was cautious on this matter of grinding the valve stems but it seems all is ok. If you dont ask then you dont know. Now all I need to do is to remember all these imformation gems!! The fuel pump push rod bushing should have been removed before the block was cleaned. No big deal to replace it but if it’s not worn through it’s ok. There’s no pressure between the rod and bushing.

I do not recall seeing a 59A with freeze plugs. If I ever found one I would use a sealant when installing them.
There is minimal side thrust on the pump pushrod and .020 clearance is not a worry. There is basically no limit to material removal for stem clearance setting. |

I thank you for your comments and will inform machinist and be guided accordingly. This engine would be a C 59a block with freeze plugs which are the standard 3/4" size. My hope is this short block will be on the back of my 38 PU and heading home later today. Phil NZ |
