Shortened drive line/torque tube...does this look right?
I installed a set of 1935-1936 3.54 rear end gears in my 1934 rear end. Part of that installation is shortening the drive line around a 1/2". I simply shoved the driveline back on the spines of the pinion a bit and plan on re-drilling the hole.
My question is, is this about where the driveline needs to be? The speedo drive gear looks to be lined up in the hole, and the end of the drive line sticks above the bell around a 1/8"

Left is 33 { note the low position of the lube fitting like a 32 } & right is 34 . Your driveshaft sticks out more than these old grimy gennies . Also it is shadowed but the speedo gear on the 34 is a little further back than yours . I would say you are not quite done modifying your shaft .

Re: Shortened drive line/torque tube...does this look right?
Hey Chris,
What I've read states that the driveshaft should not extend through the yoke of the u-joint. It might could stick through a little without interfering, but better safe than sorry. After mocking mine up and taking some measurements I settled on the driveshaft being about 0.100" deep inside the torque tube when everything was bolted up. It seems like at the time I was doing it, I measured some stock rearends and came up with the same thing, same as David J is illustrating. Also, I'm having a brain lapse and can't remember where the thrust washer goes, is it in front of or behind the gear? I like seeing the speedo gear centered in that hole, but I'm not sure where it should be. Mine wound up being a little behind the hole, but less distance between the gear and the snap ring than yours. I've attached a picture of where mine wound up. It was nice meeting you at the Roundup, keep up the good work on the roadster. |

Re: Shortened drive line/torque tube...does this look right?
Thanks guys! I simply forgot to measure it before I tore it apart! I'll move her back a little bit more
Randy, good meeting you too and thanks for the help on the rear end questions. I got it all back together, it was a lot easier then I thought!!
