Default jute backing

I have been looking, with no success, for jute backing for under the rubber mat in the front of our 46. The original is Approx 1/4 to 3/8 thick and pretty ripped on the master cylinder side. Any sources??
Thanks
John

Larry, Thanks for your reply. I had seen the backing that Mac's sells but the description in their catalog calls it "synthetic" jute. I believe it is like carpet underlayment (plastic).

Vic,
Yes, I had tried them. They carry the same stuff as Mac's (synthetic). It is too thick and firm. Dimmer switch barely sticks up. Waiting for reports on the Z's road test.

I taught the same thing, and used some leftover carpet underlayment on my firewall to "double" it.

I would find something that don't absorb water, jute is the reason almost all old Ford metal flooring needed to be replaced. G.M.

I have used carpet backing from reminent store and it worked fine in the trunk area and passenger area of my car. Got all I needed for less then $20.

Jute backings can be purchased from most upholstery supply shops that cater to the auto trim business. It is still a viable padding for carpet & floor matting but it's not a bad idea to put some more modern sound deadener between it and the metal. Nearly any padding you put under there can be detrimental to the floor structure if it gets wet. On many of the old cars they put what appears to be tar paper or roofer's felt under it.
