Jim,
There will be several experts that will be here to help you soon. Probably will need to know the engine type.
My 3.5 cents(inflation)!
A friend of mine in the tractor portion of my life would have given these instructions:
Pull the engine, get it on the appropriate engine stand, turn the pan to the upright position, clean things up, remove the old pan, more cleaning, new gaskets and seals as required. Good time to examine the rotating assembly. Install clean pan with gaskets. re-install the engine. life is good! (or some variation of this) Now that was tractor engine maybe a little easier to remove the engine but the thought of the process was to be able to get the engine in a good position to do the work to make the work as leak free as possible.

Regards,
Chris and Cheryl

Are you attempting to do this with engine in the truck? You may have to rotate crank to get clearance to drop the pan. When replacing pan, screw in some studs first to make alignment easier. Use sealant on pan but block should not need it and don’t forget there’s one pan bolt in rear that goes in from the top.

Yes, need to know what engine and maybe the reason for taking the pan off in the first place. If you follow the advice from Chris, reassembly will be a pleasure....putting it back in from underneath will be quite a job.....Mark

if you flip the engine over to make it easier to remove the pan almost all the debris will go into the block , ok if you are doing a total disassembly, even so it makes more of a mess, perhaps tilt engine 45 degrees to make it easier, then debris will stay in the bottom of the pan

Jim,

I totally agree with Kurt. Thinking back on the two "B" engines we took the pans off and any old engine. Drain oil and drop the pan first.
Yes it would be much better to drop the pan after the engine is pulled prior to rotating the engine. As Kurt mentioned this will reduce/ eliminate residual gunk falling back into the engine! Great point! And there can be some stuff in the bottom of the pan if the engine has not been apart in a long time.
Rotating the engine, if possible, will make it an easier project to re-install an oil pan!
Regards,
Chris and Cheryl
