Removing 36 Engine Side Support
Hi Barners,
Engine is out but side support bars are not. The bolt attaching the bar to the frame has what I thought was an Allen head----NOT. Then I tried a 3/8 and 1/2 inch socket drive----NOT. SO WHAT THE HELL IS IT? Don't want to mess it up. Some type of square stock size? Thanks, Bruce/CT

ARe you talking about the anti-chatter rods that go from the bellhousing to the frame?

Yes it is a square stock required, since it is threaded into the rod. There are some plug wrenches out there that have several different sizes that may have the correct one. Otherwise find a square stock and use a wrench or vice grips to remove. You may need to soak it with solvent before trying, since they can be difficult to remove.

You can buy a socket that has the square drive ,

Square stock size
Thanks for the replies BUT DOES ANYONE KNOW THE SIZE???
Is it 5/16 in? Been soaking in Acetone/Trani solutoin. I'm at Carlisle (waiting for tomorrows rain) and will look for the stock. Bruce

It is 5/16 Bruce, S-K makes a drive adaptor in that size [i have ,bought one about a yr ago] im sure snap on or Matco have the same thing. ken ct.

I welded on a nut and got them off that way. Then I discovered I could buy a replacement from http://www.fordscript.com/ford_bolts/products.html. Umm, then I bought the 5/16 socket for $15 online. Wrong order but got it done. My 36 woodie has the same type of bolt to attach the floorpan to the wood spacer above the axle. I welded half a hex head bolt to half a 7/16 fine bolt and replaced that one. Should have bought the correct socket to begin with. Oh well, live and learn.

The first thing I do is shoot some good penetrating oil (like Kroil) all over the bolt and the female threaded piece attached to the frame and let that soak over night. Then I using a piece of 5/16" lathe tool square stock. Then I grind a very slight lead taper on all four sides at the end that goes into the square drive on the head of the bolt. Then find a 3/8" drive socket that will accept the other end of the square stock. I attached this to my hand held impact driver and give that a few good whacks with the driver set to move in the counter clock wise direction when impacted. A few of these whacks will usually get that bolt moving enough that an adjustable wrench or a hand held ratchet will finish removing the bolt from the frame.. As that bolt comes out make sure you don't loose that special conical shaped lock washer. Then BINGO the rods are off the frame and can be removed until reassembly of engine to vehicle..

After bashing my knuckles I gave up and drilled the heads off, my spare engine came with a clean set that were not rusted.

Found a Snap-On 3/8 drive socket that has a 5/16 male on the other end. When I get home Saturday I'll give it a try. I am confident this $ 2.00 purchase will work. Thanks and I'll report on my success, Bruce/CT
