Default Is this normal?

When I drive my 50' 3spd, no overdrive, possible it was removed IDK
I notice when I let off on the gas it feels like in goes into neutral.
Feels like it's in overdrive, but i don't have it.
I noticed because my old 54' did it when it was in overdrive.

It's like there is no back pressure when releasing the gas pedal.
Is this normal?

I would say it is NOT normal for a non-overdrive transmission to freewheel. The standard transmission does not have the sprag clutch in it to allow it. The only explanation I can think of is the throttle sticking and continuing to drive the car.

I'm not a transmission expert, so this might be a silly question, could it have had an overdrive and then removed at some time and this could be why it's driving this way?
The throttle is working properly, no sticking.
When you let off the throttle it just feels like it's gliding in neutral.

Hey Captain, Take a look underneath, someone could have put an OD tranny in it and never installed electrical components or cable to enable/disable it. Lever on transmission could be in free wheel position. Just a thought.

It's possible, I pretty much remember seeing some bolt holes where it looks like solenoid would bolt up.

"Ford38v8" yes it does it in 1st gear.

Sounds like a previous owner had trouble with the OD and took the controls off thinking that was all they had to do. I bet it IS an OD trans, especially since it does it in 1st gear. A non OD might jump out of 2nd or 3rd into neutral if very worn but not 1st.

It doesn't seem like it's coming out of gear, because when I apply the gas again it's fine, moves right along.
I going to pull the inspection cover and see if there is a lever still mounted for OD and If there is I will try move it back in opposite direction. It's acting just like the OD in engaged.

Well upon further inspection I found the lock lever for the OD on back side of transmission, moved lever forward and drove it. It was in overdrive all the time and now it's disengaged. Don't know if it's original trans or like you said, just replaced with OD transmission and no components for OD. Thanks much.

Actually, Captaintaytay, It was not in overdrive the whole time. Without the electric controls working it was in direct, but the one-way sprag was letting it freewheel because it could not shift into O/D. Moving the lockout lever merely locks up the sprag so it can't freewheel (nor could it shift into overdrive even if the electric controls were working).

Thanks for the insight, wish I understood these tranny's better.
And yes I would definitely like to have a functional OD.
Everything is missing to make it work.
