Default Shifter Problem - Swivels!

My gear shift lever swivels freely in the housing. I had the transmission tower professionally rebuilt a little over a year ago with a repro chrome lever. It gave me no advanced warning. With the car not running, I can change gears through feeling for them. Can someone tell me what I am in for? Thanks.

If its like mine the shift lever has broken off where it enters the tower. Replaced my shifter with a shinny new repo this spring only lasted for 6 or 7 shifts. It was made by siliver soldering the top half into a lower half that has the big rocker ball and the 1/2 inch shifter ball. Very crappy, send it back.

Their is a small pin under the little domed cover at the base of the shifter that fits in a groove in the shift tower. It appears that the pin has broken or fell out. If you get a piece of 1/4" round rod , pull up sharply on the shifter lever and tap the new pin in it you will be good to go.

Can you pull up on it easily? If yes the spring is broken.
If you push down on it does it still twist? if yes the pin is missing.

Thanks for the quick replys. It was 14 degrees this morning in NH so as soon as it warms up I'll check it out. Since this tower and gear shift was done by one of the big parts company I am a little annoyed!

That happened to me in 2005 on the way up Pike's Peak. Scared me at first, until I found the pin on the floor. Easy fix.
