49 F1 Brake issue
Truck pulls sharply to the left when applying the brakes, assuming the right brake is not functioning. I have no experience with brake repair, where should I begin this investigation. Any help will be appreciated

Re: 49 F1 Brake issue
You'll have to pull the wheel & drum & have a look in there for signs of wheel cylinder leakage. The old type brakes aren't self adjusting types. There may be wear or lining contamination problems.

Re: 49 F1 Brake issue
Old age. They can collapse internally, thereby “necking down”on ID and causing a restriction. I once chased this issue on a brand new hose that was improperly manufactured also.

Check the keft front brake for leaks if the car is pulling to the left.

Re: 49 F1 Brake issue
Buy some new cylinders and hoses and fit them. They're cheap. If the shoes are good re-use them.
You need to tackle this job because you need to build up the familiarity with the old stuff if you want to drive with confidence. Inspect both sides and only dismantle one side. Then you have the complete side as a pattern if you can't see how it goes back together. To be honest, that is one of the simplest setups there is so would be a good one to have a go at if it is your first time. Mart. |

Re: 49 F1 Brake issue
Looks like the brake shoes are backwards, short shoe should be on the front.

Re: 49 F1 Brake issue
JT, you can get a simple set of tools for the brakes, there is a doodad that winds the springs off and helps you slip them on.
These pliers have the ends like the tools you need. Go to your local auto parts place and ask for old type brake tools. The round end takes the springs off and the shaped end puts them on. |

Re: 49 F1 Brake issue
Sounds like a wear problem. Have you backed the adjusters on that wheel all the way off?

Re: 49 F1 Brake issue
Do you know how to back off the adjuster? It's that star wheel near the bottom on the link. Put a screwdriver blade through the slot in the backplate and rotate the star wheel so it shortens the link.
Then the drum should come off. Use the right side as a pattern so you can see what should be happening. Mart. |

Re: 49 F1 Brake issue
If the vehicle pulls to the left, the right side front brakes are the problem.

Re: 49 F1 Brake issue
Maybe it's the camera, but that whole brake assembly looks rotated to the rear too much. The wheel cylinder should be parallel to the top of the grease shield, too.

If you don't have pliers grab the extended part at right angles with vice grips, two hand s right pulls left holds

Re: 49 F1 Brake issue
F-1 and F-100 backing plates are clocked to the rear on the spindles to permit the brake hose to clear the top kingpin boss on the spindles.

I start out by putting the adjuster in properly. Sometimes it is fun learning about unfamiliar stuff.

Re: 49 F1 Brake issue
Good catch rich B. It's good when the solution is simple. This is a good illustration of the power of a photograph. Without that we would all be going down the overly thick lining route.
JT: You will observe when fitted correctly the spring rests on the star wheel hence stopping it from moving unintentionally. |

Re: 49 F1 Brake issue
I'd do yourself a favor and invest a few dollars in a set of speed bleeders.
Will make your life way easier bleeding the brakes. They're 3/8-24 on the F1......... SB3824L I believe those are the ones on my 48 truck. Last edited by 1948F-1Pickup; 09-15-2021 at 03:44 PM. |
