redrilling heads
simple question but worth asking has anyone redrilled early 59a heads [center outlet ] the second boss [rear on each head] appears to be cast into the head [for temp sender etc] but has not been drilled Simply dont want to drill to find that theres not enough metal to support the thread

If there is a boss, there ought to be enough material for the thread. They wouldn't cast the boss in if it was not going to get drilled for some application or other. You might be able to get a finger down the hole and feel the other side.

I would have no problem drilling/tapping it. Make sure you have a high-quality tap and use plenty of cutting oil. What you don't want to do is put too much outward pressure on the boss and crack it.
Same goes for when you put the brass adapter fitting into it, use a good thread sealer and don't over-tighten the adapter - as it is easy for a tapered pipe-thread to crack the boss as well. |
