The 48 base and 97 interchange so I don't see the problem. Uncle Max is the man to ask.

Look at the difference: Venturi, air bleeds. Not a good idea.

Re: building a 48 from a doner 97
Rebuild it and try it, a little bigger in diameter 1-1/32”.

You are correct about the base. The pump rod for the 48 is shorter than the pump rod for the 97 / 81.

Re: building a 48 from a doner 97
You can swap the middle bodies - not a problem. A true 48 base does NOT have the dual accelerator pump positions like a 97 does, and you can swap based back and forth. I've seen many combinations over the years - people swapped all sorts of stuff around. As Nick noted, make sure you have the correct length accel-pump push rod if you're running the 48 base. I actually prefer to use the 97 bases - as I like the adjustment. With that said, I always use the outward position - for more of an accel pump squirt.

All you have to do is replace the butterfly shaft with a 97 into a 48 and you're good to go.Stromberg has them new

Also, the choke setup is a bit different on a true 48 - the linkage, etc..
