1933 Hudson Essex Terraplane 8

John Dillinger's bullet-ridden 1933 Essex Terraplane, which he preferred over GM and Fords when it came to outrunning police.

1930's advertising slogan : “On the sea that’s aquaplaning, in the air that’s aeroplaning, but on the land, in the traffic, on the hills, hot diggity dog, that’s Terraplaning!”

The word "TERRE" is actually the French translation of the word "LAND", for those that didn't realize it.

The Essex was a brand of automobile produced by the Essex Motor Company between 1918 and 1922, and by Hudson Motor Car Company of Detroit, Michigan between 1922 and 1933. Essex cars were designed to be moderately priced cars which would be affordable to the average family.

I fail to see the relationship between criminals and the early Ford V8. The V8 Times has gotten into stories about these characters and It appears to be a waste of paper. I do understand the interest but the V8 Times and this web site are supposed to be about the Early Ford.

If you look closely at the pix of the '33 Hudson/Terraplane you should note the body is actually a Ford body.
I recall reading an article many years ago about the Hudson/Terraplane body suppliers plant burning down in '33-34. To fill the void the supplier bought basic body shells from Ford which required very little alterations to be used on the Hudson/Terraplane cars.

Well, I've got a really neat bridge for sale, if you're interested.

It actually doesn't take much of a 'car guy' to see that a '33 Terraplane body shell was never a Ford-produced '33. I chose this crummy looking example because it shows the body lines and shapes rather well. Doors are different, as is cowl area, top structure and windows/windshield. Even the firewall is nothing like a Ford.

I think it might have been Hupmobile that used Ford bodies in the early thirties.

Hupmobile Three Window Coupe Body with 1934 Ford Front Sheet Metal.
Ford Australian never offered a 1933 or 1934 Ford Deluxe Three Window Coupe.
Some enterprising Hot Rodder managed to locate this Hupmobile Body and converted it into a 1934 Ford Three Window Coupe.
However, if you look closely, you will see that the Doors are Cabriolet Style and the windows wind completely down.
