Default Front hub seals

The parts catalogs list front hub seals. I did not have any seals when I took mine apart. Is this an aftermarket item, or were they supposed to be there all along?

Good question neighbor, I was surprised when I tore mine apart and it didn't either.

There is a Front Hub Inner Dust Seal that goes onto the spindle before the inner bearing. The outer did not have a dust seal from the factory but the vendors sell a dust seal/cover if you want one.

It is just a dust seal steel ring without rubber that is supposed to keep the dirt out of the bearings.

Some fit well...the ones made in India usually dont.

You just tap them on with a rubber hammer or a hammer and drift pin.

Unless the manufacturers of that particular dust seal have seen the light.....the inner dust seals you purchase need to be chucked into a lathe, and the inner ring lip machined back about .010 - .015", before you try to install them. These repo inner seals will drag on the inner bearing without machining.

If it is the outer dust cap, that you are refering to, these were not originaly supplied by Ford, and if the proper outside diameter spindle washer is used, the repo dust caps are usless.

If you are referring to Ford part number A1190, beware of reproductions, they can cause you some serious grief. A few years ago the market was flooded with the part made in India. Everything about it was wrong. It can jam the wheel bearing and it can also come off the spindle.

I ran into the problem and finally left them off one of my cars for a couple of years before I found some originals at a swap meet. I installed the originals when I rebuilt the front end. They are not really necessary and can be left off with no adverse affect.

Bratton's discovered the problem when some of his customers complained. He sent his entire stock out for rework, and so stated in his catalog. Unfortunately only one of the four critical dimensions was corrected. I notice that his 2010 catalog states that the part (Bratton p\n 1610) is all new manufacturing. Bratton's is famous for developing local manufacturing using the original Ford drawing.
