1932 frame horn covers
I bought a pair of 32 rear frame horn covers from a gentleman who claims they are original. They are in perfect condition. They do not have the wire hole on either side below the two bumper iron/taillight bracket holes. As you look at them from the side the seam (vertical) in the bumper iron mount area is in line with the curved pinch weld seam and it is bead welded. I have noticed on originals that this seam area is offset to the rear approximately 3/16 inch. The curved pinch weld area also has spot welds showing on the inside. Is there any way to verify original verses repro?

Re: 1932 frame horn covers
This sounds like a straightforward question that should have a straightforward answer, but '32 frame horn covers are anything but straightforward as there are six distinctly different versions of the originals.
The absence of a hole for the wiring could be explained by them being an unmatched pair in the sense of a right side cover for LHD applications and a left side cover for RHD applications. But, the presence of spot welding is a bit of a red flag. Since there were six different ones, a photo of both the inside and outside of the area where the bumper bracket is attached would be helpful to know which of the six you have (assuming that both of what you have are otherwise mirror images on one another) for comparison purposes. |

Re: 1932 frame horn covers
I took pictures of the area requested, but I am unable to get them to load. If you are familiar with the HAMB board, they were posted in the parts for sale section on 1-1-21. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Re: 1932 frame horn covers
If so, those are not one of the six known versions of the originals. i.e. they are reproductions as none of the six had oval holes where the cover attached to the rear fender. Originals have only round holes (the earliest versions) or rectangular holes.

Re: 1932 frame horn covers
Those in the ebay listing in #8 above appear to be as advertised, namely originals, and I agree that they were a bargain.

Thank you to those who responded especially to Uncle Buck for bringing up the pictures, and David G for his great knowledge of the subject!

Re: 1932 frame horn covers
Not surprisingly, the more I look at the photos courtesy of Uncle Buck, the more that I see that does not ring true. Note the placement of the two holes for the bumper bracket bolts which is unlike any other version that I am aware of and compare it with those in the attached photos of three originals of the six known varieties. The rearmost of those two holes in each cover appears to be too low with the result of a widening gap between the top of the bumper bracket and the edge of the depressed area in the cover, which clearly would not be the design intent.

Re: 1932 frame horn covers
Those swoopy coved covers are neat! What version are they?
Did the single top-bumper covers (early) only come with round holes for the fender? |

Re: 1932 frame horn covers
I believe that they were a short-lived early version given the apparent scarcity of surviving examples, although they have shown up on both U.S. and European '32s. My favorite, which I believe to be the earliest of the six is shown below in the photo from the Ford U.S. archives.
As an aside also in that photo please note that the end of the bumper has a small center knuckle. Some believe that only reproduction bumpers have the small knuckles on the end, which obviously was not the case. They are admittedly not often encountered in original form, but even NOS examples of them exist. |

Re: 1932 frame horn covers
And no seam shows on the old pic there. Maybe they found welding up a seam and metal finishing it took too much time.
