Default Trunk Rack.....Help Needed

For those of you who have a trunk rack.

I got a rusty rack that once cleaned up will be put in service.

My question:

Anyone have pictures and description of how the bolts, acorn nuts and washers attach? Are there spacers? What keeps the rack in the up position when the trunk is not on it?

I have it assembled but there are 2 pieces that I have yet figured out where they go.......picture attached.

Thanks.

I believe you assembled it wrong. The two piece bracket circled in red, bolts from the chrome horizontal part (base) to the black vertical part. This allows the chrome base to fold up vertically when the rack is not needed. There should be two small clips (not showed in your picture) that attach to the base that are used to hold the base to a chrome rod that connects to the vertical back.

A piece on each end of the rack folds down onto the round bar to keep the rack folded up. As far as spacers go where the acorn nuts go I used combinations of nuts and washers in order for the fold up arms to open and close smoothly.

You will have to turn this picture sideways to make sense. My photo storage site is acting up this afternoon. You can see that with the side arms in the closed position my combination of washers, lock washers, regular nuts and acorn nuts makes no sense but the rack has opened and closed well for over 30 years. You just have to play around with the combinations until the arms are relatively parallel when closed. Mine are not and I just noticed after taking the picture!

Here is a picture of my original trunk rack on my Victoria.
The clip that you have circled is used to hold the rack in the up position.
