Best tube shock absorber kit
Does anyone have a opinion about the differences in the various shock kits available from our suppliers. They all seem to be about the same price.
Are they all made by one shop? If so it would seem to be a case of "just pick one" and order it. I've looked at Snyder's, Bert"s and Mike's offerings and they all look the same. The kit will be going on my 31 roadster. Thanks, John

Re: Best tube shock absorber kit
One difference I saw was in the front shock bracket. Some require drilling the front axle. There are pros and cons to this.
In the end, I bought and installed the Snyder's kit because it didn't require drilling the front axle and there were favorable comments about it on this forum. Here's a link to my post were I ramble on about my installation experience. http://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=173021 I'm happy with the way my '29 rides now. But, as my husband commented "anything is better than not having any shocks". |

I have Ken Davis, Snyders and Sullivan's. I see very little difference in performance ! I think Sullivan's is cheapest but he spray paints a red shock black and I was not very impressed with the spray job. Ken Davis or Snyders will be my next purchase. Wayne

Re: Best tube shock absorber kit
I wonder if everyone knows about the gas shocks? They also are oil filled but have some gas vapor to put a light pressure on the oil to help prevent foaming during hard use. So the gas in the shock shouldn't make it ride stiffer, but the shock might be designed for a heavier car. The gas pressure will push the piston to the extended position, but this only gives the car a few extra pounds of lift, and is nothing like overload shocks.

Re: Best tube shock absorber kit
I'm a fan of the Ken Davis shocks. If I had another Model A in need of shocks, I would certainly buy another set.

I don't have a Model A. I don't use tube shocks. But, I did have occasion to chat with Ken. What a great and helpful guy. Couldn't ask for better.

Re: Best tube shock absorber kit
I went with the Ken Davis shocks. Drilling the front axle was easy - and if I ever wanted to go back to stock shocks, it would be easy to fill the holes. In my opinion it is a much cleaner looking installation than having something clamped around the axle.
The ride and stability of my 31 CCPU are much improved over no shocks!
